President Obama’s Statement on Libya No-Fly Zone

video

On the heels of a surprising UN vote authorizing a no-fly zone in Libya (as well as “all necessary measures” to protect civilians), President Obama delivered remarks in the White House’s East Room Friday afternoon. The President denounced Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi‘s brutal repression of his own citizens, and announced US plans to join the UN in enforcing the resolution “through military action.”

Some have criticized the President’s actions on Libya, but in achieving an international consensus, and a strong UN resolution that no one initially expected to pass the Security Council, he has lent the effort credibility within the Middle East, while shielding the US from becoming embroiled in another Mideast quagmire.

BARACK OBAMA: THE WEAKEST PRESIDENT IN HISTORY?

    Friday March 18,2011
    By Anna Pukas
INEFFECTUAL, invisible, unable to honour pledges and now blamed for letting Gaddafi off the hook. Why Obama’s gone from ‘Yes we can’ to ‘Er, maybe we shouldn’t’…
Let us cast our minds back to those remarkable days in November 2008 when the son of a Kenyan goatherd was elected to the White House. It was a bright new dawn – even brighter than the coming of the Kennedys and their new Camelot. JFK may be considered as being from an ethnic and religious minority – Irish and Catholic – but he was still very rich and very white. Barack Obama, by contrast, was a true breakthrough president. The world would change because obviously America had changed.

Obama’s campaign slogan was mesmerisingly simple and brimming with self-belief: “Yes we can.” His presidency, however, is turning out to be more about “no we won’t.” Even more worryingly, it seems to be very much about: “Maybe we can… do what, exactly?“ The world feels like a dangerous place when leaders are seen to lack certitude but the only thing President Obama seems decisive about is his indecision. What should the US do about Libya? What should the US do about the Middle East in general? What about the country’s crippling debts? What is the US going to do about Afghanistan, about Iran?

What is President Obama doing about anything? The most alarming answer – your guess is as good as mine – is also, frankly, the most accurate one. What the President is not doing is being clear, resolute and pro-active, which is surely a big part of his job description. This is what he has to say about the popular uprising in Libya: “Gaddafi must go.” At least, that was his position on March 3.

Since then, other countries – most notably Britain and France – have been calling for some kind of intervention. Even the Arab League, a notoriously conservative organisation, has declared support for sanctions. But from the White House has come only the blah-blah of bland statements filled with meaningless expressions

He did all that? I could have sworn it was Sarkozy who took the lead on this while Obama played golf or did nothing at all.

He didn’t do jack squat except what he always does. he WAITED UNTIL IT WAS SAFE, he waited until the UN made a decision, then he decided with them. Had they dithered, he would have dithered right along with them.

He’s weak, and the entire world can see that.

Meaning, even the Tea Party doesn’t particularly care for your stupidity. He is the ultimate empty suit….the same emptysuit that you campaigned for, voted for, put up on a pedestal, and no matter how much you write, and you and your lefties pretend to make him something other than what he is, it won’t work anymore. What is the Daily Express? Is it just an innocous British newspaper? Not quite.

The Express apologized and paid damages to a charity after falsely claiming the group had connections to Al Qaeda. They paid another charity £60,000 in damages and apologized after falsely linking the charity to Hamas.
Express Newspapers apologized and paid £550,000 in damages for a series of stories that Express lawyers admitted were “extremely serious, yet baseless, allegations” implicating the parents of missing child Madeleine McCainn in their child’s disappearance.
The Express apologized and paid £45,000 to an assistant secretary of the Muslim Council of Great Britain after the paper had falsely linked him to death threats against Prince Harry
The Express apologized and paid £20,000 in damages to actress Kate Beckinsale for a false story claiming she had been passed over for a role
The Express apologized and made an undisclosed payout in damages after falsely claiming that a soccer star had relapsed into alcoholism after his wife’s financial demands
Guardian columnist Richard Greenslade documented 23 instances between March 2008 and November 2010 where the Express’ parent company had to pay damages for libel claims

The Express also dabbles in immigrant bashing as well, blaming foraging for wild mushrooms, home theft, and job losses on “migrants.” The paper somehow turned three protesters into a front-page story claiming “Muslims Tell British: Go To Hell.”

There are ample examples of the Express practicing extremely shoddy journalism. No wonder Fox and Drudge are promoting them.

    .
After listening to the speech I was really confused.

Did BHO lead the way or did he follow way back in the column behind the French and Brits?

Now that the decision has been made what is the holdup. This has been going on for a month and I heard today that the US Navy just began deploying to the area. Shouldn’t that have happened a long time ago if BHO had been the leader on this so that he would be ready once the consensus came thru?

All of this begs the question of who of the rebels are left to save. Are there even any of them surviviong to benefit from the help?

Three days ago this is what Ambassador Susan Rice said about it:

“Ambassador Rice: We are discussing very seriously and leading efforts in the Council around a range of actions that we believe could be effective in protecting civilians. Those include discussion of a no-fly zone. But the U.S. view is that we need to be prepared to contemplate steps that include, but perhaps go beyond, a no-fly zone at this point, as the situation on the ground has evolved, and as a no-fly zone has inherent limitations in terms of protection of civilians at immediate risk.”.

Why does “prepared to contemplate” not conjure up visions of a strong leader focused on an objective and leading others to it?

Should we have really expected something else from Obama? Or W? Or Clinton, Sr., Reagan, etc? Change, in terms of positive progress, doesn’t happen because a certain individual gets a title. Societies change for the better when people collectively decide to courageously look for real, solid, sustainable solutions and don’t back down from demanding them from themselves as individuals and from the societal structure they agree will provide the platform for said change. On that note, as Ambrose suggests, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.” Something is more important, something worth standing up for. Not because of fear, but because all of humanity’s connected well being is more important.
Obama is a man.. a man of his time and his world, but one blinded by the useless constructs built before him. We can’t expect him or any other one person to do what the world needs to do.
I challenge people to think of how ridiculous this system has become. We no longer need it, there are better ways in which every single person can access anything of the highest possible quality they would ever need or want. No central controlling class, and everyone having the opportunity to make their life what they want. The whole political spectrum has become a disappointment, not just Obama, who is just a product of this baloney. No degree of liberalism or conservatism is going to make this stuff any better, and, well.. how is that not obvious?

Let’s reward the brave soldiers, the brave protesters everywhere, whose effort is to create and sustain freedom, by actually allowing for everyone to have exactly that. We don’t have to have what we do at the expense of anyone else anymore- and when we move past that, what would we fight about? It’s about solving simple problems like hunger, energy, sheltering, and so on, in a way that is not harmful.. but useful. It’s not about doing what is useful for everyone, not so people have a uniform supply of the lowest common denominator of goods and services (we are past that crap) run by some central authority. I hope people don’t tolerate the plethora of nonsensical legislation and declarations on the horizon and in process. It’s beneath us.

Oh, the irony…..as Obama starts another war.

America isn’t going to be bombing people in this adventure, as you conservatives bellyached for the past 30 days, remember?

” President Barack Obama is trying to limit the United States’ role in enforcing a no-fly zone over Libya to support aircraft only and is very reluctant to commit any offensive U.S. firepower, a senior U.S. official familiar with the military planning discussions said Friday.

“We will provide the unique capabilities that we can bring to bear to stop the violence against civilians, including enabling our European allies and Arab partners to effectively enforce a no-fly zone,” the president said in a nationally televised statement about U.S. military action.

“The president chose his words deliberately and carefully, and you should be guided by them,” the official said. “He is very sensitive that this not be a U.S. operation. We are part of it. And of course, we by nature of our superior capabilities have a lead and leadership role to play. But we are part of it and expect a lot from our partners,” the official said.”

“Asked about the “unique capabilities” the president talked about contributing, the official said that at least for now, they would not involve combat fighters or bombers but instead would include AWACS, intelligence-gathering drones and other intelligence assets, and refueling and air traffic control.”

Hence, Lover….your fantasies of seeing American fighters and bombers “shocking” and “awing” Libya apparently will NOT become a reality.

And YOU still won’t step up for the challenge, will you? Tell me why you’re so hell bent on supporting the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD rebellion in Libya?

Challenge to you, as well. Answer the question. Do you support the MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD rebellion in Libya?

Show the wisp of courage that your fellow right wingers in here can’t seem to muster.

If you support the “Rebels” in Libya, you’re supporting the Muslim Brotherhood. FACT.

No, that’s CONSERVATIVES…..like the folks on Fox News and this blog stamping their feet and demanding that the US start bombing Libyans….on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood rebellion.

Non-answer. Are you gonna show some guts and pledge allegiance to the Muslim Brotherhood Rebellion like Grammie, Gordon and TfT have done on this thread?

News flash….I don’t and never had said we should “unilaterallly” initiate military action in Libya. In fact, I’ve argued that there are plenty of close neighbors who could do that if they are so inclined. If I had my way we’d pull out of the entire region except fopr defense of Israel and let those savages butcher each other right back into the seventh century. It’s what they’re good at.

My issue with Obama is that he does NOTHING. N-O-T-H-I-N-G until its safe to do something. He didn’t even have the leadership to say, hey, we ain’t comin’. Get over it. Wanna fix Libya? Fix it yourselves. he voted “present” and waited to see which way the political wind blows.

Like I said, he’s weak. There’s your “double dog dare” answer, Mr. Cobra.

    Gaddafi’s touching words about Obama:

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi considers the US president a blessing to the Muslim world. In a speech published in London-based al-Hayat newspaper on Saturday, Gaddafi praised Barack Obama, called him a “friend” and said there is no longer any dispute between his country and the US.

Speaking in the Libyan city of Sirt at an event marking the 24th anniversary of an American attack on Libya, he said, “At the time, we were the target of the American cannon, the American navy challenged us in the gulf of Sirt and attacked us all along Libya’s shores. America tested Libya, and the Libyan people resisted the large country, but today, thank God, the difference is great.”

He said, “Now, ruling America is a black man from our continent, an African from Arab descent, from Muslim descent, and this is something we never imagined – that from Reagan we would get to Barakeh Obama.”

    Then yesterday he said,

Trying to strike a personal note, Gaddafi prefaced his letter saying, “To our son, his excellency, Mr Baracka Hussein Obama. I have said to you before, that even if Libya and the United States of America enter into a war, god forbid, you will always remain a son. Your picture will not be changed.”

    How sweet.

Are you saying that Israel is incapable of defending itself?

He does “nothing” according to whom? Fox News? Talk Radio? Is there some special conference call with the State Department and Joint Chiefs that you participate in that gives you first hand knowledge of:

    A) Who the Obama Administration talks with
    B) What covert operations are occurring at any time around the world
    C) High Cabinet meeting minutes

Harry, are you one of those types that needs to be “entertained” by government officials with snappy, soundbite catch phrases like:
    “Freedom’s on the march”
    “Wanted: Dead or Alive”
“We’ll smoke ‘em out of the caves”

I hope not, because Libya, like most real life middle east situations is COMPLICATED.

“If the rebel council is recognized by the world, the council could be allowed access to Libyan funds abroad and to the proceeds of oil sales, and it could make it easier to take legal and political action against Gaddafi. France last week became the first country to recognize the council as Libya’s legitimate government.

Still, it’s unlikely that a post-Gaddafi government will support U.S. policies in the Middle East. Members of the national council said they were opposed to U.S. policies in Israel and the Palestinian territories, as well as in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

    http://www.todaybreakingnews.com/?p=472

I suppose Harry, given your statement on Israel, that you would be THOROUGHLY PLEASED with a Libyan Rebel Government that not only married to the Muslim Brotherhood, but anti-Israel, huh?

That’s what makes it even more complicated. That’s why I thank GOD that there’s a cautious, thoughtful CIC in the White House that doesn’t make hair-trigger, spontaneous pronouncements and decisions that would have sweeping global repercussions.

“”Bush is saying that America is fighting for the triumph of freedom,” Gaddafi said between sips of tea. “When we were supporting liberation movements in the world, we were arguing that it was for the victory of freedom. We both agree. We were fighting for the cause of freedom….”

…On Monday, Gaddafi accomplished one of history’s great diplomatic turnarounds when Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice announced that the U.S. was restoring full diplomatic relations with Libya and held up the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as “a model” for others to follow. Rice attributed the ending of the U.S.’s long break in diplomatic relations to Gaddafi’s historic decision in 2003 to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and renounce terrorism as well as Libya’s “excellent cooperation in response to common global threats faced by the civilized world since September 11, 2001.”
