Rep. Cantor: Obama Stormed Out Of Meeting After Saying ‘Don’t Call My Bluff’

video

This much we know is true: a little while ago, a private meeting between President Obama and Congressional leaders regarding the budget battle ended. Beyond that, the hearsay is flying fast and loose, as Rep. Eric Cantor tells Politico that the President lectured him on Ronald Reagan, told him “don’t call my bluff,” and “abruptly” left the meeting. Meanwhile, Democratic sources claim the President left when the meeting was over and “lit up” Rep. Cantor so badly “if the public saw, Obama would win in a landslide.”

“Eric, don’t call my bluff,” Rep. Cantor claims the President told him, and– according to reports from both parties– then began to lecture the room on talks, claiming that not even Ronald Reagan would accept the terms Republicans were proposing and that, according to Reuters, “I’ve reached my limit. This may bring my presidency own, but I will not yield on this.” He then left the meeting– because the meeting ended, claim Democratic sources, but Republicans say he merely stormed out. Rep. Cantor himself said the President “shoved back and said ‘I’ll see you tomorrow,’ and walked out.” For added cattiness, the Politico report notes one Democrat quipping off the record, “Cantor is the last guy who should complain about people abruptly leaving meetings.”

CNN’s Jessica Yellin reported on John King USA today that the key issue that ticked the President off was Rep. Cantor proposing “a series of short-term votes for the term extension,” something that had been considered unacceptable in many points during the negotiations. This, Yellin relayed, sent him into a lecture about how inefficient Washington was and why faith in the government was at such a low point. This matches the Politico report, in which one official described the speech as “incredible.” The budget talks will continue tomorrow, in the shadow of Moody’s threatening to lower America’s credit rating if the nation defaults on its debt.

Yellin’s report via CNN below:

So I guess things are moving along just fine.

Sounds like The Chicago Jesus is getting thin skinned. Always a bad day when the cool kid picks up his marbles and goes home.

  • catfishjuggling show

You hillbillies would call him a badass if he had a R after his name and pulled this stunt.

This is a non-story, but it’ll get 473 comments coming up with clever ways to spell Obama.

    TOTALLY AWESOME

Would love to see what him “LIGHTING INTO CANTOR” was. I’m guessing it was a bigger spanking than that time he met with all of them re: healthcare.

CSPAN should totally have cameras in the room for these debt ceiling talks to see how CRAZY the GOP is acting.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHhhHh

    GO OBAMA GO!!!!

  • e83talus

Good. The repuublicans have been throwing tantrums for 2 years. I am glad to see an Angry Black man finally!

  • Gefforyk

This is getting so old, every couple of months there is a new crisis… if they want to keep playing these gaimes let them crash and burn I am sure that the American people will pick up the pieces and throw them all out in the next election.

C-Span, cameras? Never going to happen, that would involve Obama keeping his promise of transparency..

What a clown. He apparently really does think of himself as America’s “commander.” The trouble is that Hussein’s had everything he’s wanted throughout his entire life handed to him…………………..until now. He just doesn’t know how to act.

Sorry but with his build and demeanor and mannerisms, he comes off like a petulant child. He just can’t pull off “tough guy”. Like Maher says, he’s not black enough. Barry can’t go all “hood” and sh*t, especially when he wears his mom jeans.

Davo, you are SO right. He was raised to be a spoiled brat and he did have everything handed to him, without ever having to work for anything. He’s a NARCISSISTIC SOCIOPATH- very dangerous man.

Isn’t there some kingdom for which we can nominate him to be KING- or more to his liking, EMPEROR!

  • ChrisNH

This is TERRIFIC! Obamo–the most petulant, child-like, thin-skinned Leftist EVER–is reaching his breaking point. With no friends ANYWHERE, Obamo can no longer say that it’s simply that others are walking out on HIM; he’s agitated too.

The characterization by Cantor is spot-on: Obamo is agitated and stormed out. He’s mad that the pitchforks are pointed AT him rather than BY him.

Enjoy your last eighteen months of watercress, Obamo.

  • Gefforyk

Somehow I don’t remember seeing those, my memory must be a little off cuz I am sure that our president would never lie to us.

  • TfT

Well, I have learned over time taht CNN is completely unreliable, so I don’t put much faith into Jessica yellin’s reportage; she is just another Susan Rosegyn.

Obama is not a leader, he is busy campaigning. Whoever said this crisis will not end until hehimself is out of office was flat on accruate; this manchild is incapable of leading. he has become a joke.

  • BFD

    WAAAAAAAAAAA…..MOMMY, OBAMA YELLED AT ME!!!!!!!!

The level of magical thinking on the right these days is really phenomenal. Never before in our nation’s history (as far as I can recall) has one portion of the political class been so totally out of touch with both reality and the people.

Wingnuts — you will pay a heavy price in November 2012. I just hope that you don’t drag the rest of us down before you’re presented with the bill.

  • felixw

Obama doesn’t have much leverage. If he agrees with the Republicans, he will be forced to reduce spending. And if he can’t reach a deal with the Republicans, the government hits its debt limit….and then he will be forced to reduce spending. The same end-point, no matter which way he turns. He better start figuring out where to cut.

  • TfT

only in liberal lala land does the one who thorws the hissy fit be the man!

This is what happens when the media build a false pedestal to put an empty suit on. he is incapable, incompetent, and a one termer, rightly so.

Plz. Cantor can’t pull off the “tough guy” act. He’s more like the nerdy kid in school who keeps trying to sit at the cool kids table.

  • ChrisNH

This is SO rich…the tweed-jacketed, haughty, faculty-lounge academic decides to LECTURE…This is SO Obamo-like.

Of course, this is all happening on Obamo’s watch. When Bush was president, Leftists like to say that everything negative happened on ‘His Watch.’ Never mind that Pelosi & Reid were very much running things. No. It was all happening on ‘Bush’s watch.’

How wonderful to have this line of logic come full-circle.

Keep chanting “one term, one term, one term . . .” I’m sure it’ll have a lot of impact on objective reality. The noise will also prevent you from hearing what the people are saying, which is that the GOP is completely nuts.

From reports of others attending the meeting, Can’tor fabricated this story. Can’tor’s own petulance will either win him leadership in the House (should the Tea Partiers usurp the Republican party) or kill his career (if, as is more likely, the “business” Republicans fend off the attack of the barbarians).

  • TfT

A plurality of Americans trust the Republican congressional leadership more than they trust President Barack Obama to handle the federal deficit and the debt ceiling, according to a new Gallup poll.

A majority of Americans are also more concerned that the government will raise the debt ceiling without plans for major spending cuts than they are that the government will precipitate a major economic crisis if it does not raise the debt limit.

Only 22 percent of Americans, according to Gallup, say they want their member of Congress to vote to raise the debt ceiling.

Between July 7-10, Gallup interviewed 1,016 adults for the poll.

Respondents were asked: “Who do you trust more to handle the issues concerning the federal budget deficit and the federal debt ceiling President Obama (or) the Republican leaders in Congress?”

Forty-six percent said they trusted the Republican leaders in Congress more, and 43 percent said they trusted President Obama more. Eleven percent said they had no opinion.

-0bama – The Spoiled Brat president-

OK. We really don’t have a two party system, it’s really one big party that allows itself to be manipulated by the lobbyists and their masters. As there were always a few decent Democrats, there were also a number of high grade Republicans to keep a check on things. All that has changed as the Republican Party has been completely taken over by rightwing ideologues. The clearest indication of the rightward slide of our country is the disparity of incomes. You have to go back well over a hundred years to the time of the “Robber Barons” who were running this country until the great liberal Republican Teddy Roosevelt told them they would have to break up their monopolies and let other people have a chance at making money. – share the wealth. It’s obvious when you have vast concentrations of wealth you have less democracy. Is that hard to understand.
No one begrudges the rich their wealth. Hell, I’m a real estate broker and always want to make more money. But, really, the rich must pay their fair share, and they aren’t. Without us and the structure our wonderful country provides to ambitious people, the very rich wouldn’t be very rich. After all, we’re their support system.
As I read the comments from rightwingers on this blog and elsewhere I’m really concerned about your grasp of reality. Do you really think that the Tea Party, Bachmann, Cantor, Palin, et al could for a moment run this country? All their greedy trickle down policies have failed. Bush ran this country into the ground. It wasn’t all his fault. He just facilitated a rapid decline. His replacement, Obama, is a clever, talented man trying in an equitable fashion to work things out in a surprisingly nonpartisan way. Of course, you violently disagree. He’s a moron, community organizer, unqualified, unpatriotic, wimp, socialist, and worse. He already has a legacy and while it’s not yet great, it’s already a lot better than that of his predecessor. Sadly, the rightwing has become the lackeys of the oligarchic class, our modern kings and royalty. I thought we rebelled against the British, the symbol being the real Tea Party in Boston harbor.
What’s going on with Rupert Murdoch is also a sign of the waning of the right. Murdoch is a media genius whose meglomania got the best of him. The unravelling of his empire is just beginning. He’s freaked out the British by his very ungentlemanly and sleazy code of ethics and it’s a wake up call for what he’s done in this country through his media outlets. I realize that talking to the rightwing people who inhabit this website is almost futile, but, hopefully, a few of you are catching on to what’s really happening. The rightwing resurgence seems to be winding down.

Paul Ryan presented a budget plan that would right the sinking ship. Obama on the other hand gave a speech in which he acted like a giant d*ck, not a budget plan.

Most people would equate the man who came up with a debt solving plan as the man with the guts and the man who threw a passive aggressive hissy fit wrapped in a condescending speech a gutless d*ck.

If you believe these some of these waivers won’t become permanent you’re on crack, especially the union Cadillac plans.

I’ve read nothing about any Police unions losing benefits. If your town is having revenue problems due to the horrible Obama economy, then aren’t you Democrats always talking about “shared sacrifice”? I’d been in a union for 10 years and I saw all the lazy bums with seniority sitting on their asses doing nothing all day long for years…and getting 30 hours of overtime each week to boot! Unions are their own worst enemies and what is happening to them today is long overdue.
I’ve also spent alot of years on the streets of one of the poorest urban cities in the country and all of my customers got either free or extremely inexpensive health care at the local clinics that were conveniently located throughout all the neighborhoods. As a matter of fact, most of my clients who were on welfare and foodstamps had more disposable income then I did at the time. That’s not hyperbole either, but fact.

The clinics are staffed by decent Doctors who volunteer their time. Works as a tax right off for them. The unskilled staffers don’t make much money. It sounds like your community is having revenue problems. Where I live they’re always playing around with the number of full time Police officers and part timers in order not to go over budget. Democratic sources claim the President left when the meeting was over and “lit up” Rep. Cantor so badly “if the public saw, Obama would win in a landslide.”

Yeah Right! If he can speak so well off the cuff, then do it! In front of the American people without a tele-prompter, without the sarcasm, without all the cliches. More like a tantrum followed by a long winded lecture with no solutions. Lead Mr. President, stop complaining and do your job. You have the WH, you had both houses but you were more concerned with overhauling our entire healthcare system, (something that with all due respect could have waited) when you should have been addressing more pressing matters to the financial restitution of our nation.
If this was the greatest recession since the greatest depression, as Obama was so fond of saying then why wait almost 3 years into the presidency to address it ? Does everything have to be a crisis or is that the only way he can appear to be “presidential”?

Yeah, in our enlightened society marrying adolescent girls is a form of perversion, but in backwards cultures that haven’t evolved they consider dumping a girl on someone else a relief of the burden of having to feed her. But they don’t do same sex marriages. They’d hang the boys/men who tried to do that.

If the gay activists in this country pushed for civil unions, as I did when I supported John Kerry in 2004, I’d have no beef. But I think many gay activists behaved like a bunch of jaggoffs, to be blunt, and wanted gay marriage because they loathe God and Christians and wanted to deliberately cause damage to traditional marriage as a big FU to the people they hate.

Reagan never faced this type of opposition. Back then congressmen were willing to compromise and work together as adults. And exactly Nationman. This asylums were horrible. They chained people up the strapped them down, they injected them with unapproved drugs and they lobotomized them. Was that better Oxy? And one reason why we have such a problem with the mentally ill is that the services that were there to support them have been slashed and burned in the name of cutting govt spending.

Yea but Oxy you need to put things into historical perspective. You think things are worse than ever before but that is patently untrue. Do we have a debt problem? Sure we do but its lower per the GDP than it was after world war 2. And we’ve managed since then. One of the things that drive me nuts about the conservative mentality is that you guys tend to look towards the past as if it was some sort of la la land where everyone danced and lived happy. Let me give you and example. When do you think was the highest murder rate for police officers? A good conservative would say well right now of course ,I read about cops getting killed every day. Well that is false. The 1920s were horrible for cops during prohibition the 60s 70s and 80s all had higher murder rates for cops. Id rather be a sheriff out here in the west today than back in 1875 let me tell you buddy. They were shot and killed like cattle back then. The murder rate in general is lower today than its been in 50 years. Back when there were no social services (aka the great depression) people died in the streets. Breadlines formed around corners, families were torn apart. During the dustbowl farms were blown away. We were involved in major wars form 1865 to 1965 were millions of men were killed and wounded. This doesn’t sound so great to me. I talk to my parents and grandparents and there stories about the good all days don’t sound all that good.

Maybe you don’t hang out at a country club and sip wine and eat cheese but the way you talk it sounds as if you do. You think these republicans are going to make the average middle or lower class dudes life better. Thats the last thing they are interested in and its been that way for a long time. I don’t blame the rich guy for being a republican, what always has amazed me is the poor white working class guy who is fooled by them. They take advantage of him cause he thinks that these guys must be on my side cause socially I agree with what they say. Course he doesn’t know that actually they use the social politics as a way to fool him and that they really have no interest in social politics. All they want is to lower tax rates on the rich(cause after all they are the only ones who pay taxes right?) and make it better for them. They will raise the debt ceiling just like their Wall Street Bosses tell them to and then they’ll run to the TeaBagger Cult and beg for forgiveness……What a complete and total joke these guys are!

This next year is going to be a beautiful thing watching them self-destruct!

And as far as ideology goes, maybe he just opposes raising taxes while in a recession? You libs are so hard up for “fairness” your too dumb to realize what damages occure while seaking it.

Obama is so fricking arrogant and narcisistic it is disturbing; this is what happens to empty suits whenthey are puffed up by a bunch of media sycophants. Just look at the idiot who interviewed Obama the other day, Pelly didn’t even bother to react to the President’s threat to withhold SS from seniors. nope, Scott set up the question, as he was directed to do so by this manchild.

What a sick and sorry world we live in when the media has completely abdicated its responsibility and does nothing more than sit and be his tool and his fool.

These are sad days for our country.

I wonder when the media will finally stand up and say: enough is enough. My guess is never, they have so dislodged themselves from reality by bending to HIS every wish and whim they are beyond help.

The “compromise” talk is a bunch of nonsense. If a compromise would help you lose a war, would you do it or fight against it? Especially when you have the backing of the people! The last election seems to be getting ignored in all this and thats a farce. Republicans and the Tea Party won the biggest landslide in decades and it was soley for this reason, to defeat this far leftwing idiot in the White House.

Obama ask for “compromise” as if he doesn’t realize that would be directly against what got many of these people elected, getting them in trouble with their constituents? I mean I know he’s stupid, but dont you libs see this? Take your compromise and go to hell! This is ideological war and you need to lose and lose big!

Raising taxes on the rich has nothing to do with saving this country from the far left wing anti American scum of the earth. Just stop the madness and ridiculous spending and a little at a time as time goes on, just kick the bums out of office! Either all the democrats or RINO’s, just get rid of anyone who doesn’t get it.

JUST STOP the damn spending and realize the whole “Steal from the rich and give to the poor” via taxing concept is moronic, counter productive and not gonna work! The rich already pay way more then everyone else and a broke guy never gave anyone a job. Get over it libs! Your just stupid! Your whole ideology is childlike and dangerous.

Cantor’s see’s this 1-1=0 balanced, 2-1=1 reducing of budget numbers and Obama see’s this raise debt ceiling 25 trillion – trying to find rich guys to steal from over ten years if they can find them that makes his hope and changy balanced budget numbers! It was a good thing to do. He made his point that he would not be bluffed, there was no more to discuss that day, and he did something relaxing. Perfect negotiation tactic. However, I do dispute your use of the word “ran.” As I understand it, he walked out as anyone would at the end of the session. He would have been a weak negotiator if he then disappeared from sight and fools like you could then imply that he was brooding in some dark room.

The democrats are trumping this up because they desperately want the little guy to appear to be sooo tough……evidently they don’t believe he is so they resort. This was a sham, a clown show. It had the Reagan mention that prompted the nitwits to trot out their shiny new talking point, plenty of embellishment, ala his, ahem, “schooling Canter,” who has actually been in the trenches working, while the little guy played golf. This rediculous incident is the only transparent thing that bunch has managed to, heh, almost pull off. Yeah, they are serious about the debt ceiling, sure they are, snicker.

Am I to believe the words of Eric “businesses started hiring because Republicans took control of Congress & don’t forget they shot through my window” Cantor? Face it, they don’t like the fact that Obama turned their bullshit back in their faces. He’s the only one actually trying to do something here while the Republicans are just playing games. If they were actually serious like they were under Clinton they’d enact tax increases along with entitlement reform. I suppose this is a new millennium “read my lips: no new taxes”.

  • Gefforyk

No matter how the press tries to spin this, and no matter how much the Dems try to look reasonable, the American people can do math, they are not about to over look the record spending, the record deficits, the accelerated growth of government, that has bought us nothing more than even more dysfunctionality. I think it is all very simple, if the republicans fold, they will not gain re-election and they know it.. The progressives out there can say how retarded that is, how backwards that is… But they would do well to get over it…. They may hold the Senate and the Executive, but they they have lost the support of the majority of the people in this country and regardless of what progressives would like to think this country is still right of center…. It is just a matter of time now.. there will be a deal as the Dems will cave because they know that they do not have popular support, they will then rant for the next year and a half, bloggers will go nuts about how corrupt the system is that allows pea brains to control it… but in the end, we will see many Dems not be invited to return to DC after the 2012 elections, and the world will be a better place.

Heya Purveyor nope im not debating with myself. Im debating with people who over simplify everything and somehow come on here with talking points from the left and the right and spew them out like a paid blogger. I don’t mind a good complicated heartfelt argument but when people come on here and quote what they heard on Rush Limbaugh or Shawn Hannity it annoys me. Politics bothers me not so much as I believe that the democrats are better for this country than the republicans but that people like Oxy and their ilk don’t do the research on their own party. I can own up to the democrats mistakes and have many times. But to sit here and type blank obviously naive comments right out of the GOP bible is not real debate. I can sit here and say did you know that Reagan your hero almost quadrupled the budget deficit during his presidency? And instead of saying well yes I did know that ,or no i didn’t know that they just ignore it. How is that an honest debate? Its not and im sure you have run into these types on this board on my side many times as well so I hope you share my frustration:)
