Sen. Harry Reid To Nevada Legislators: “The Time Has Come To Outlaw Prostitution”

Video

Democratic Senator Harry Reid has had enough of hookers and wants the “oldest profession” finally banned in Nevada. In a speech to the Nevada state legislature, Reid advised that outlawing prostitution is the key to Nevada’s economic recovery, a suggestion which, at best, received a tepid applause from his audience.

Reid’s proclamation:

“Nevada needs to be known as the first place for innovation and investment – not the last place where prostitution is still legal. When the nation thinks about Nevada, it should think about the world’s newest ideas and newest careers – not about its oldest profession. . . . If we want to attract business to Nevada that puts people back to work, the time has come to outlaw prostitution.”

Apparently unhappy with the slogan “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” Reid seems to prefer that instead of businessmen leaving behind their memories of a good time, they instead stay in the state with investment and creative ideas. With unemployment running unacceptably high in Nevada all suggestions should be on the table, yet whether banning a career that would put even more people out of work is the solution for lowering unemployment and attracting new businesses will be up for the people of Nevada to decide.

The time has come because they no longer honor Harry ‘s Senior Citizen discount .

Where then, pray tell, would the big money Democrats go to have their kind of fun?

Referrals from David Vitter (R-LA) I assume?

  • Harry Flashman

Gonna be tough on him. He’s been a political whore for years.

Indeed. I can’t believe Republicans in Nevada allowed Palin to talk them into nominating Angle. Angle might well have been the only Republican in Nevada unable to beat Reid.

  • Judge Mental

I assume the prostitutes aren’t unionized, so they’re not useful idiots for Reid and his kind.

  • ImNotBlue

This is a surprisingly “illiberal” position for Reid.

I wonder why he chose to bring this up now.

  • spacegod

Huh? The smart liberal policy of allowing people to do what they want with their own bodies as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone is now sticking its nose into our bedroom? The puritanical hypocritically-less-government rightwing do that already. Our bedroom’s getting awfully crowded.

  • BadGenome

He hastily added, “Not political prostitution, though! Lulz!”

They don’t make any (money) state tax off the legalized brothels, so what does he care…

It seems silly to do away with the heavily regulated brothels because prostitution will not go away. Especially in Vegas. I would guess there are more illegal prostitutes than legal. At least the brothels are safe, tested, and pay federal taxes.

Hore house Harry Reid said what.

Well I guess he will stop bragging about learning to swim at a HORE house in Search Lihgt Nevada. He loves to tell the story of the “lovely ladies” who taught him to swim.

That’s what I’m thinking…and i’m confused why so many right-wing regular visitors to this site are seemingly throwing a little opposition to his statement on this.

So…you’re implying that left wingers would be more likely to take advantage of legal prostitution in NV, so keeping in with that line of thinking, right wingers would be more likely to stay away from such hedonism…therefore, naturally you would agree with him on this, right?

  • http://TheDividedStatesBlog.com Publius219

What an idiot. Yes, outlaw it. Because outlawing things prevents them from occurring, instead of simply forcing them underground to the untaxed, unregulated black market where the only recourse for anything is violence. Good idea Harry. How sad is it that he got re-elected? What does that say about the state of our politics where he could rightfully get re-elected because the GOP is so fvcking crazy they can’t even field legitimate candidates? Ignorance is America’s downfall.

And to follow that, it’s generally going to be right-wingers that bring jobs and prosperity along with their businesses, so Harry is right in thinking they might not come to Nevada while there’s prostitution, right?

They have to attack liberals for everything that we do. They know no other way. That’s their problem

  • bealzebubba

Well, I’m trying to get to the bottom of this. It’s easy for me to dismiss the reactions along those lines of just fundamental opposition, but I’m all about discussion.

If there’s a valid reason why this is a bad idea, then explain it. Don’t just throw out some quick one liner. Don’t submit a thumbs down to a valid question and just walk away. ‘Splain it to me, Lucy.

  • writer

I’ve never been to a prostitute, so I don’t believe they exist.

  • Insert Ideology Here

what happened to the freedom that supposedly comes from the left with regards to people making choices, you know abortion choices are okay, but selling your body is wrong, Harry Reid is such an imbecile

I would wish that prostitution become legal everywhere and allow tax revenue to increase from people not working in the black market economy,
autonomous agents deciding to sell their bodies for monetary compensation should not be an issue

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josh-Feldman/1158574704 Josh Feldman

Does that include legislative prostitution or can politicians still be bought off?

  • nice_thought

Finally, blue pills stopped working on harry Reid.

  • bealzebubba

Well, the likeliness of that happening, at least in the red states, is pretty nil…why? Because they’re conservative. It would go against conservative values, right?

Do I think that making prostitution in Nevada illegal is a bad thing? Yeah, sure I do. It’s clearly worked so far….so my opposition to this should be pretty clear…even if I don’t live in Nevada and have no need for such ‘services’.

Because it’s Harry Reid. The left-wing idologues do the same for certain right-wing personalities. As I’ve said before, Beck could come out and say the sky was blue, and some on the left would still complain. The nature of the beast.

So…you’re implying that left wingers would be more likely to take advantage of legal prostitution in NV, so keeping in with that line of thinking, right wingers would be more likely to stay away from such hedonism…therefore, naturally you would agree with him on this, right?

No, you misunderstand. I didn’t say anything about them taking advantage of certain services. I’m speaking legally, the left tends to me sympathetic to this type of stuff, while the right isn’t… until you get to the Libertarian-right, when they become for it again. Service wise, I’m not sure you could really find a difference… except one might feel more shame (at least publically), than the other.

Personally, I’m a little mixed on the issue. I don’t like the idea of the government endorsing prostitution, but at the same time, let adults make their own decisions. I don’t want to see street walkers in my town, but keeping them in Vegas doesn’t really bother me either. Maybe that’s a selfish way to look at it… but I think that’s where I’m at.

I love that you guys blame the right for not running a better candidate against him… instead of the DEMOCRATS who voted for him, once again… and the DEMOCRATS who keep in power in the Senate. Blame the Republicans, all the time, every time.

Prostitution permeates our society in a lot of ways. People sell themselves for money in a lot of ways. It seems like a real waste of resources to pursue it as illegal.
And legalize pot as well. Another huge waste of funds on something less harmful than alcohol.

LOL!! Holy Smokes writer, that may be your funniest post ever.

I heard someone say something similar when Christine ODonnell was getting her masturbation converge.

“ODonell will have to pry my d*** out of my cold dead hand.” Man I howled.

I allways thaought that prostitution WAS their TAX base, but with “our” ‘lected officials -
I guess that it has become OUR TAX Base!

  • CAconservative

Prostitute? What the hell does Reid think he is? At least prostitutes provide a worthwhile service. And the difference between a prostitute, and politicians is…they’ll STOP SCREWING YOU WHEN YOU DIE!! Nevada has a Landry list of economic, and criminal matters that take priority over this but, being the political whore Reid is, this trash takes priority?! What the hell is he trying to avoid?

  • Johnnie Dorman

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard from Reid’s mouth. If it weren’t for the revenue that comes from legal prostitution in that state, they’d be more broke than they already are. The money made from prostitution is only pumped into the Nevada economy, and creating more prohibition never helps anything. I suggest that Harry Reid needs to concern himself with more important matters, like how we get our jobs back from these other third world countries and stop oppressing U.S. citizens. I just became ashamed that he’s a Democratic leader. Dumb, dumb, dumb.

  • woodhouserlw

Sounds like somebody didn’t get their kickback….. this won’t work anyway, government requires politicians…

  • Gfhgdffgd

Shouldn’t this be classified as human trafficking? Call a spade a spade. Just because you convince a woman that she is a wonderful, beautiful sex symbol, doesn’t mean you should excuse the brain washing, that alone should be a federal offense. If the government placed higher taxes on it, then it would grind to a halt. No woman should be given the idea that she is a peice of meat meant for money making purposes. What a racket…. Couldn’t you just hear your baby daughter saying; “I want to be a Vegas prostitute when I grow up.” Of course I am sure some fathers would think that was cool. Totally disgusting.
