Van Susteren: Scalise Should Have ‘Stepped Aside’
Fox News host Greta van Susteren told ABC News Sunday morning that incoming GOP Majority Whip Steve Scalise should have stepped aside following revelations that he spoke in 2002 at an event that was to at least some extent affiliated with white supremacist David Duke.
“This was a huge missed opportunity for the Republican Party,” she said. “The Republican Party wanted to send a message out there. I don’t know if it was fair to Congressman Scalise or not, but to associate with David Duke is not grossly wise.”

Scalise has thus far survived the fallout from the revelation, with the GOP leadership standing behind him, in part because the circumstances surrounding the speaking engagement are murky.
No matter, van Susteren said. “If you want to send a message to the American people, Republicans and Democrats, this would have been the opportunity. Step aside, whether it’s fair or not, and send a message that we’re not going to have this distraction, we really do want to have everybody on board.”
