Worst Timing Ever: The Golden Globes Cuts To Cast Of The Help After ‘Racist’ Joke

video

Earlier this evening, we had a bit of fun with the technical difficulties that the Golden Globes telecast began with. At the time, we assumed that that would be the worst flub of the night. Oh boy, were we wrong. Towards the end of the show, host Ricky Gervais made a joke about how racist fellow Brit Colin Firth apparently was. Hearing the word “racist,” someone in the control room instantly thought it was a good idea to cut to the cast of The Help, one of the most predominantly African American casts of the year. Whoops.

RELATED: Ricky Gervais Is As Wicked As Ever In His Return Golden Globes Monologue

Honestly, this was most likely just an unhappy accident. We assume they just had that camera cued up and were waiting to cut to it, but this was really unfortunate. It was probably the worst choice made this evening other than the Golden Globes’ choice of “best” televised comedies (seriously, that category must have been chosen by someone who doesn’t own a television).

Accident or not, the moment gave Gervais a big run for his money as the resident king of cringe comedy.

Mediaite is becoming worse than HuffPo with these faux scandals.

  • Anonymous

ahh… I think that was on purpose

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

    I didn’t seem like a mistake at all…
Octavia Spencer was laughing and shaking her head, which it seems is the reason they cut to her.

I was playing a drinking game where every time I spotted an African American, I had to drink.  I was still on my first beer and it was getting warm until this slip up.

  • http://twitter.com/siyafrica siyafrica

Thank you for acknowledging the TV comedy category as a sham. Seriously I was ok with Modern Family winning only because that meant New Girl Jess didn’t win. Where was the nomination for Community?

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Does anyone think it weird that any time an African American was up for something, they had another African American introduce/announce it…?

Is that a special thing, or does it make it seem like a separate Black category kind of…?

Sidney gave Morgan his award, and they had Queen Latifa introduce The Help. I understood the Sidney one, but then when they did it again with Queen, it seemed kind of strange.

Im a fat black man and this is not bad. Ohh I love chicken and watermelon.

  • Anonymous

Lol!  That’s what they call the diversity shots, Sara!  The same reason they had Sofia  Vergara, Antonio Banderas, and Salma Hyek on stage together.  This way they can show how diverse Hollywood is.

  • Anonymous

    And not white women?

  • Anonymous

The Community snub is just outrageous, that show is so good .

  • Anonymous

Lol! at The racist elites and Jews in Hollywood!

  • Anonymous

Hollywood is almost as white as an Occupy protest or your average MSNBC viewer.

  • Jon Bershad

Community,Louie, so many others too numerable to mention. That category was awful.

  • Jon Bershad

Less scandal then “awkward moment.” Don’t be faux-outraged by our faux-outrage.

  • OSTL

No, he’s a racist and a sock puppet. But you already knew that.

  • Anonymous

But Hollywood is not as white as Fox News or even close to as white as the Tea Party.

  • http://twitter.com/fatninja2485 Mike

Only fat ones. The heavier the better.

Gervais was lame tonight.  He must of have been told to scale it down.  He will never admit it though.

it’s an interesting little “awkward moment”

but Mencius does have a grain of a point

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1190134026 Barry Dalton

    What chu talkin’ ’bout?

MSNBC has Micheal Steel up in the house yo!

It’s cool to actually hear from a moderator, Jon.

It’s like you’ve got the invincibility cheat code in a video game.

But name one comedy more awesome than Community that was not nominated.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1190134026 Barry Dalton

it would be hard to top what he did last year

    expectations were too high

i doubt anyone told him to tone it down

    it’s just common sense

he’ll wait until the situation is more awkward and he can catch folks off guard, like he did last year

Why was it bad timing?  Because it showed how achingly unfunny RG was?  There was such a lack of clever in that guy it was hideous to watch.

After I went to bed, I thought about that, as well… very, very inta’restin’

You must be paranoid about race, to note these specific cases only. I bet you also had issue with Janet Jackson parenting and narrating before the Legend award was presented to Michael Jackson. Unn both were from the same background, what a scandal. I bet you had issues with Brits presenting awards to other Brits, I mean Gervais was is a Brit and Elba is one so there must be a connection. Get a life and don’t be obsessed by race.

This was a beautiful night where Hollywood elite Leftists got BLUDGEONED, and for all to see. The avalanche of bad press for this elitist pot-banging show comprising rich one-percenters is all over the place.

I LOVE seeing Hollywood elites get humiliated and bashed.

Does anyone care about vapid, frivolous nonsense like the Golden Globes?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

    It’s a conspiracy. I’m sure of it.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

See. Conspiracy. If we had any Armenian actors it would be just the same.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

You must really like T-Partee rallies. Or, you must have really liked them. Don’t seem to be having many these days.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

What is the basis for this insecurity you have?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Conspiracy theories always are. That’s why good hosts and hostesses always invite several conspiracy theorists to elegant cocktail parties.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I don’t think it was an accident in the same sense you do. The camerman was not eating a pretzel, passed out, hit the camera on the way down and knocked it over to the table with the cast of “The Help”. It was an accident of timing. The incident at the table resulted in a scan which coincided with the racist remark.

  • Anonymous

Do you have statistics? Or a source? You’re Republican? Oh, ok, forgot you guys don’t use those things, lol.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Nope, not paranoid. It actually started because I was watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition where this wonderful woman established a home (her tiny home) for homeless female vets to come and stay, so they could get back on their feet. They had Michelle Obama present her with a flag, and met her, and wrote her a letter, etc. and I thought it was so moving, and wonderful for this wonderful (female african american) vet to be honored for her heroic actions, by the first African American FLOTUS.

Then I was watching GGs, and thought how cool it was for Freeman to be presented the award by Sidney. Then, when Queen came out and introduced the movie The Help, it occurred to me that they brought out African Americans whenever there was an African American recipient.

I posed the question if it was perceived as *an honor* or if it came across a tad bit *segregationist* or *black specific category-ish* to have Blacks introducing Blacks all the time.

Can’t black people introduce white people, and vice versa?

Get a life? I have a wonderful life. I merely posed a question. It’s you leftist race baiters that seem to be a little *touchy* about the subject. Perhaps touching a little too close to home for ya?

  • Anonymous

    and your point is???

Should NBC just stuff the audience with black folks just so you could finish your beer, or what? How many “African Americans” did you expect to see? Why? What would it had proved?

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Gee Turk, do you think we touched a few nerves? HAHA They can’t handle the truth!

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Conspiracy, no. But well crafted, thought out, every move and presentation staged down to the finest detail, show, yes. It’s not a coinkidink.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

The incident at the table resulted in the producer yelling *camera 2, camera 2* to capture the reaction from The Help table. They hired Gervais. Do you think they weren’t living/hoping for moments like these? There were like five black people in the audience – it wasn’t unintentional that the camera zoomed in on The Help.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

I don’t know why this comment is allowed to stay here.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Could you give me a Wikipedia citation for that, please?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

What truth would that be, Sarah N. Italy? That you and Turk are engaging in wild, unfounded supposition. Perfectly acceptable supposition, to be sure, but supposition, nonetheless. The type of supposition supporting racially-tinged world views. But, there is an innocent quality to all of this. Brits and Americans share a language, but not a sense of humor. And, Brits don’t have to deal with the elephant herd in every ballroom, convention hall, office, classroom, living room – slavery and racism. This is the truth.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

Paranoid? I couldn’t say. But self-righteous in some odd purgative sense that somehow seems not to cure the bloating. “Obsessive” is a much more on target word than “paranoid”.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

I was being tongue-in-cheek whilst you were positing a theory based on no discernible evidence, for reasons about which I have no clue.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

    It’s a conspiracy.

Clearly it must have struck a nerve, for you to reply with a full page ranting and excuses for your race obsessed mind. Everyone else was just watching a program of people coming together and awarding themselves in their field of work. But you had to pick a part that is divisive and try to put unrelated things together and start a race debate. People are tired of this kind of divisive crap. What if this was a marine or other situation, I bet you had issues with the Military when the General was presented with the flags during the ceremony and the officer that passed it to him was also black, I bet there must be some conspiracy in the military to allow that to happen. You are pathetic and seriously need to get a life.

  • Anonymous

She is pathetic, can’t watch a program for what it is. She had to take a back seat and say let me view this as a tea party wretch would and try to mess things up. It does not make any sense. I made the example of the Iraq hand over where the General was Black and the officer that handed it over was also African American, I bet there must be some race thing going on in the military for this to happen.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

No where am I ranting or excusing. Where is the rant? Please point out where I am ranting. I reread my comment, and it doesn’t sound anything at all like a rant. Just a comment, and a simple question.

I am explaining, commenting, discussing a topic about something that occurred to me. Are you aware of the concept?

Are you denying that it happened?

“You are pathetic and seriously need to get a life.” – I do believe these kind of attacks are against the new commenting guidelines at Mediaite.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

Two black people received honors, and both times black people introduced them. I asked if it was an honor, or some sort of weird thing where they have to have black people introduce black people… I asked if it made it seem like they were in a *Black* category* cuz that was kind of the vibe it gave me.

You spammed the site with about six comments about it being a conspiracy, so I granted you the attention you were so desperately seeking.

  • Anonymous

Right! after been called out you had to make the silly excuse. If that was off limit, perhaps race baiter like yourself need to be kicked out as well. Reasonable people accept people as they are, it’s folks like you that want to point out the differences and stir up trouble.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

“How many “African Americans” did you expect to see? Why? What would it had proved?”

Who knows, but it seemed extremely important to critics of the Tea Party.

Although, I suppose it could demonstrate a lack of good roles for black actors in *liberal, non racist* Hollywood.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

You too seem to be violating the Mediaite guidelines. I do believe they asked that people stop making personal attacks on other commenters.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

What does British and American humor have to do with the lack of diversity in Hollywood?

LOL! Who said I wasn’t accepting them? I asked a friggin question about the show, something I observed. Are you denying it happened as I described? It isn’t a *silly* excuse, it occurred to me for the reasons I stated.

I explained where I was coming from, why I arrived at that observation. I am not race baiting, I am asking a question, based on an observation. Trust me dear, I do not feel *called out* nor the need to justify myself to you. I was attempting to have a discussion, but obviously that is not something you are capable of.

Stir up trouble? By pointing out a fact of the show? Is Jon stirring up trouble by pointing out his observation about the show?

I need to be kicked out? Of what?

Pathetic, and a wretch? Wow… like I said, dude, just asking a question based on an observation that I arrived at, as I so nicely explained.

You and king are the ones who turned this nasty, personal, political and made a big deal about it.

So how come you didn’t include the military in your silly ‘observation’? And regarding kicking out, isn’t hat what you were referring to by mentioning the new mediate guideline?

  • Anonymous

Asking question like Beck does with baseless crap?

  • The Real Royal Emperor

My dear, that was not attack. You were never addressed nor mentioned, and the language was completely acceptable. I have noticed a tendency on the part of many since the new guidelines to whine about purported guideline violations whenever substantive arguments have failed. Most unbecoming.

I should note, I have specifically said your view is acceptable even if it is the thinnest of supposition. We all need to remind one another and the other commenters when in our pompous  self-assurance we assume our views are absolute truth. I know, I appreciate such reminders.

Include the military in my question about why Black people were announcing Black honorees? I have no idea what you are referring to.
I am not saying anyone should be kicked out. I am pointing out the roolz, that they asked for people to stop calling each other names. Calling me pathetic and a wretch I believe violates those roolz.
You might deem my question “baseless crap”, but the events as I described them happened, and it was an honest question about an honest observation. How can you describe it baseless when it happened?
Nowhere have you or rrk disputed or even attempted to converse on the actual topic. Name calling and hysterics don’t really count as civil replies….

The respective races of the presenters and honorees should not matter, but blacks have been really underrepresented in winning these things, so they probably get a charge from getting one from a previous black winner.  My favorite Oscar moment was Marion Cotillard’s win for La Vie En Rose.  She was so overwhelmed, and held together by her presenter, the great Forrest Whittaker.  Oscar gold.

  • http://www.sarainitalyblog.blogspot.com/ sarainitaly

That’s what I was thinking at first, with Sidney, but when Queen introduced The Help clip, I was like, hmmmm? Do they always do that? Perhaps because there are so few in actual attendance, it stuck out to me.

I loved when Holly Berry won – that was a great moment. (did you see King of Scotland? SO good!)

Even more awkward: As a writer, your misuse of then and than.

Seriously, hardly anyone watches stuff like the Golden Globes.

You know Turk, that is exactly why I don’t watch these award shows.  It’s just a sea of white people, just like the Republican convention.  I applaud those who win these awards, but let me say, it wold be nice to see this industry diversify ethnically.  Here is my major beef:  we’re watching the Academy Awards, a film wins and their staff comes on stage or we’re watching the Emmy Awards and a sitcom wins…their staff comes on stage.  Young black and brown people are rarely if ever part of those groups.  It’s clearly a case of discrimination,..why aren’t young people of color given the same opportunity to work on these programs and grow their skills.  It  is clearly a racist industry that professes to be liberal.  I’m not buying it, there’s too much evidence to the contrary.  Good luck watching racism at work.
