Saturday Night Live Cold Open Mocks Biden’s ‘Bad’ Summer, Tucker Carlson and AOC’s ‘Tax the Rich’ Dress

Saturday Night Live returned for its 47th season, kicking the show off with a cold open mocking the ongoing bipartisan infrastructure bill negotiations. Tonight’s episode features Owen Wilson as host and Kacey Musgraves as the musical guest.

James Austin Johnson debuted in the role of President Joe Biden, and began the show by asking how everybody’s summer was.

“Mine was bad — not Cuomo bad, but definitely not Afghanistan good,” he said. “Everyone keeps rising me about the drone strike. But on the bright side I went the entire summer without falling down the stairs once.”

The show then turned its attention to the infrastructure negotiations, taking jabs at Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ).

Cecily Strong, in the role of Sinema, said: “What do I want from this bill? I’ll never tell because I didn’t come to Congress to make friends. And so far, mission accomplished.”

Aidy Bryant then made an appearance as Manchin, or as Biden put it, “the de facto president of the United States.”

Both Sinema and Manchin stood in the way of passing Democrats’ $3.5 trillion reconciliation package this week, much to the chagrin of colleagues in the Democratic party.

The cold open referenced the inter-party tensions, bringing out Melissa Villaseñor as Ocasio-Cortez  and Sasheer Zamata as Omar.

“I was designed in a lab to give Tucker Carlson a heart attack,” joked Omar.

The show then jabbed at Ocasio’s Cortez’s Met Gala appearance, with her saying, “I wore a dress that said ‘Tax the Rich,’ and then spend the whole night partying with the rich. Oops.”

What unfolded next was a display of different priorities for the various lawmakers, as Biden tried to get everyone on the same page.

As just one example, Biden said, “Okay, let’s get real basic. Roads. Everyone okay with roads?”

“I like roads,” Omar replied, with Manchin and Ocasio-Cortez seconding that opinion.

“Kyrsten?” asked Biden.

“I want no roads,” she responded.

“No roads? Why?” Biden prodded.

“Chaos.”
