Bill O’Reilly Says Trump ‘Drove’ Comey Indictment Without Drawing On Any ‘Legal Basis’
Bill O’Reilly said President Donald Trump didn’t draw on any “legal basis” in his push for the Justice Department going after ex-FBI Director James Comey and the president’s other enemies, but that he still believes there is a good chance Comey is “going to get convicted.”
The former Fox News star shared his thoughts on the cases against Comey, as well as New York City Attorney General Letitia James (D) and former National Security Advisor John Bolton, during an appearance on The Dan Abrams Show on SiriusXM on Monday.
Trump, O’Reilly said, “drove it 100% because he believes that these three people did so much damage to the country [that] they should pay.”
Abrams, who is the founder of Mediaite, jumped in and noted, “That’s not a legal reason to bring the case.”
“I absolutely know that,” O’Reilly said. “I’m not as smart as you, but I know that is not a legal basis.”
O’Reilly said he believed this was now a case of “revenge versus retribution” — and which camp you are in likely depends on which political party you vote for.
“The American people can make up their own minds on it. The MAGA people are going to say, ‘It’s retribution — they deserve to be taken down, they’re corrupt officials,'” O’Reilly said. “And the people who don’t like MAGA and Trump are going to say, ‘No, this is a persecution, [it’s] purely revenge.’ So you can make up your own mind.”
Their conversation on Monday happened right around the same time Comey filed a motion to dismiss the charges against him.
Comey, in his legal filing, said the two counts against him — making a false statement to Congress and obstruction of a congressional proceeding — were brought simply because President Trump holds “personal spite” against him. The president hates Comey, his filing said, because Comey has “vigorously and prominently” criticized him in the media.
Abrams, a moment earlier in his interview with O’Reilly, said the charges were clearly orchestrated by Trump. He pointed to a Truth Social post that Trump sent last month, urging Attorney General Pam Bondi to take “action” against Comey and his other rivals.
“This administration, after Trump accidentally sent out that note to Pam Bondi demanding these prosecutions — I would hope that you would come out and say that’s shameful,” Abrams pressed.
O’Reilly — who now shares his political and social takes on YouTube — said he would “never use that word,” but that he agreed with Abrams on the larger point.
“I can tell you that these cases did not have to be brought, alright? So Comey, and Letitia James, and Bolton, none of those cases had to be brought,” O’Reilly said.
“How about saying they shouldn’t have been brought up?” Abrams responded.
O’Reilly said he was not willing to go that far, because he does not know what exact evidence the Justice Department has against Comey.
“If the Justice Department comes up with witnesses that say — and they’d have to be FBI agents or personnel — ‘James Comey wanted to leak this out to the New York Times, and I saw and I heard him say that,’ James Comey is going to get convicted. So you don’t know whether they have those witnesses or not, Abrams.”
Abrams told O’Reilly he is skeptical about the case, because career prosecutors declined to bring charges, and “that should tell you a whole lot.”
