WATCH: Secretary of State Antony Blinken Jams with Jon Batiste’s Band on Colbert
Secretary of State Antony Blinken gave an impromptu performance at the end of his interview on The Late Show.
Blinken sat down with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday, during which the two discussed United States efforts in Ukraine and building back the State Department following Donald Trump’s presidency.
“I can tell you this, the State Department is back,” Blinken told Colbert before listing some of the department’s recent achievements.
Towards the end of the interview, Colbert placed a photo of Blinken playing the guitar on his desk, saying, “As important as that work is that you just described, I think perhaps you’ll best be remembered as the lead guitarist of the band ABlinken.”
“I long wanted to be a musician as a kid. As a teenager, that’s what I wanted to do,” Blinken told Colbert. “There was just one missing ingredient: talent.”
Despite the crack, Blinken’s band actually has three songs on Spotify titled, “Lip Service,” “Patience,” and “Without Ya.”

Blinken himself has described his sounds as “wonk rock” and has even performed with Steely Dan’s Jeff ‘Skunk’ Baxter at an official government reception in 2016.
The secretary of state agreed to show off his talents on Wednesday, jamming out with Jon Batiste’s band Stay Human to play Colbert and his team out.
