Dave Smith Apologizes For Backing Trump in 2024 — Calls For His Impeachment and Removal: ‘What an Impotent Leader!’

Comedian and commentator Dave Smith apologized for his prior support of President Donald Trump — and said he should be impeached and removed from office — in a new interview.

Smith, a libertarian who backed Trump in the 2024 election, decried Trump’s handling of the conflict between Iran and Israel in an appearance on the popular YouTube program Breaking Points on Monday.

“I supported him this last year,” Smith told Breaking Points hosts Saagar Enjeti and Krystal Ball. “I apologize for doing so. It was a bad calculation. At the time it seemed like the right one. He should be impeached and removed.”

Israel and Iran have exchanged missile attacks in recent days after Israel launched a strike last week they said was intended to stop Tehran from developing nuclear weapons — a charge Iran denies. The United States, which had been holding nuclear talks with Iran, continues to push for a deal, though talks have been halted since violence first broke out. Trump has publicly expressed support for Israel’s attack.

Smith, who supported Trump in the 2024 election on the grounds that the Republican ran on a campaign of ending foreign wars, called Trump’s involvement in the escalation between Israel and Iran an “absolute betrayal of everything that he ran and campaigned on and everything he has stood for.”

“Trump is going to lose his coalition over this,” Smith said. “There are a lot of us that simply will not go along with this.”

Smith joins a growing chorus of Trump supporters who have condemned the president over the strikes. Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, said Monday that if the United States is dragged into a war with Iran, it could be the “end” of Trump’s presidency and “the American empire.”

In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump warned Iran against any attack on the United States while expressing hope for a deal: “If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict!!!”

“Donald Trump telling [Iran] to come back to the negotiating table now is a joke,” Smith said. “I mean what an impotent leader! To be sitting there talking about coming back to the negotiating table. It’s like sitting there after Pearl Harbor and telling FDR now is the time to go negotiate with the Japanese. Negotiations are over now.”
