Dem Lawmaker Questions Whether Pete Hegseth Was Drunk or ‘Just Incompetent’ Amid Signalgate Controversy
A Democratic lawmaker is spotlighting the concern that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is either drunk or “just incompetent” as national security officials grapple with the explosive Signalgate scandal rocking the nation.
Rep. Seth Moulton made the shocking remarks to reporters Tuesday after U.S. intelligence leaders were grilled by a Senate panel.
Now the debate among national security professionals is over whether the secretary was just incompetent, or whether he was drunk,” Moulton said. “That’s how low this has gotten. And those are serious debates happening among national security professionals today. Because my colleagues are right.
He added: “This put American lives at risk. This cheapens the work that our men and women on the front lines of our armed services and our intelligence agencies do every single day because it says the rules that apply to you don’t apply to us as leaders.”
The Senate Intelligence Committee hearing was held a day after Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic revealed he was inadvertently invited to a Signal group chat called “Houthi PC small group” that included Hegseth, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and CIA Director John Ratcliffe, among others.
Goldberg claims Trump’s National Security Adviser Mike Waltz accidentally added him to a group chat in which the principals committee – the heads of the top American national security agencies — discussed plans to strike Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen earlier this month, hours before the attack took place.
Last month, Moulton was one of many critics left stunned by the tense Oval Office showdown between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
