DOJ Asks Judge to Order Steve Bannon to Prison

Steve Bannon, the former Trump campaign manager turned MAGA-world podcaster, may be headed to jail sooner rather than later after federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C. filed a motion Tuesday asking he begin serving his jail sentence.
The DOJ asked U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols to order Bannon to begin serving his four-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress following Bannon losing an appeal last week.
“Consequently, there is no longer a ‘substantial question of law that is likely to result in a reversal or an order for a new trial,’” the motion read, citing Bannon losing his appeal, adding that “Under these circumstances, the Court ‘shall order’ defendant ‘be detained,’ so the stay of sentence must be lifted.”
Judge Nichols did not immediately rule on the motion, but instead gave Bannon’s lawyers until Thursday to respond.
“I’m shocked they want to silence the voice of MAGA,” Bannon told ABC News in a statement in response to the DOJ’s motion. Bannon’s War Room podcast has become a central outlet for hardright Republican leaders like Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) to voice their grievances against both Democrats and mainstream Republicans.
