Reps. Dan Goldman (D-NY) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD) penned a letter on Tuesday, joined by 25 other House Democrats, blasting Elon Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino for making money off of “X Premium accounts spreading Hamas terrorist propaganda videos glorifying barbaric acts of violence against Israelis.”
The letter comes a day after X sued Media Matters, accusing the liberal media watchdog of deceptively reporting that major company’s ads ran side-by-side with posts promoting Nazism. Media Matters has publicly expressed confidence it will win the lawsuit.
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced he joined the letter in a press release titled, “REPS. SCHIFF, GOLDMAN, RASKIN, 24 COLLEAGUES CALL OUT ELON MUSK & LINDA YACCARINO ON X’S PROFITEERING ON MISINFORMATION & HAMAS PROPAGANDA.”
“We write to express our grave concern surrounding X’s ongoing failure to abide by its own policies governing the promotion of misinformation and hateful, violent, and terroristic propaganda videos, which shockingly have been used by the company for profit,” began the letter from lawmakers, adding:
Several weeks ago, reports from multiple nonprofit research groups showed X Premium accounts spreading Hamas terrorist propaganda videos glorifying barbaric acts of violence against Israelis. Further, these reports demonstrated that X is profiting from the spread of this gruesome and harmful propaganda through account subscription fees and ad revenue.
We are demanding that you uphold your public commitments and enforce your policies. Accordingly, no later than November 27, 2023, we request that you provide all forms of written communications, including email, text messages, other messaging services, or X direct messages, relating to content moderation for any posts or accounts associated with, related to, or connected to Hamas.
The letter was also signed by Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Mark Takano (D-CA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), James P. McGovern (D-MA), Seth Magaziner (D-RI), André Carson (D-IN), Sean Casten (D-IL), Kathy Castor (D-FL), Jasmine Crockett (D-TX), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), Hank Johnson (D-GA), Greg Landsman (D-OH), Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Wiley Nickel (D-NC), Katie Porter (D-CA), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Shri Thanedar (D-MI), Dina Titus (D-NV), Lori Trahan (D-MA), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and Nikema Williams (D-GA).
