Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is now under audit over “alarming” reports of “untrained people” accessing sensitive government data and systems.

According to a report from Wired, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has officially launched a review of DOGE’s activities — and specifically its access to sensitive federal data.

The investigation was requested by congressional leaders alarmed by DOGE’s growing presence inside agencies like the Social Security Administration and the Treasury Department.

“The reports of untrained people rummaging around databases changing code, scraping data—who knows what they’re doing?—were pretty alarming,” a congressional aide told Wired.

Last month, a federal judge issued a sharp rebuke to DOGE, blocking its “fishing expedition” into Social Security data, which Musk has called a “Ponzi scheme.”

With questions over transparency when it comes to DOGE’s public “savings” receipts, the GAO probe could bring some long-awaited clarity.

GAO spokesperson Sarah Kaczmarek confirmed to Wired that the independent body “has received requests to review actions taken by DOGE across multiple agencies.”

The review is expected to conclude by late spring. Neither Musk nor DOGE responded to Wired’s request for comment.
