Incumbent New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) is reportedly set to drop out of the mayoral race that has him pitted against Zohran Mamdani (D), Andrew Cuomo (I), and Curtis Sliwa (R).

News 12 Westchester’s Tara Rosenblum reported that Adams’s announcement could come by the end of the week.

The report comes following Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D) Monday morning endorsement of Mamdani, a  33-year-old self-proclaimed democratic socialist.

President Donald Trump called Hochul’s endorsement, a “shocking development” and “very bad one for New York City.”

Earlier this month, Adams held a press conference outside Gracie Mansion to deny reports he was leaving the race, declaring he was “the only one that can beat Mamdani.”

Politico reported that in an effort to clear the way for Cuomo, Trump offered Adams a position at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In addition,  The New York Times reported that Trump was also considering giving Sliwa a position as part of his plan to “damage the chances” of Mamdani winning.

Both Adams and Sliwa denied reports they considered taking jobs with the Trump administration.

Last week, Trump seemed resigned to the fact that Mamdani would win the race. He told Fox & Friends that a Mamdani win would be tantamount to “rebellion.”

“It’s also a rebellion against bad candidates,” Trump said.

The president called Mamdani, “my little communist,” and suggested he could still wield power over New York City if Mamdani wins.

“He has to come to Washington for money,” Trump said.

Mamdani has the support of sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT). A USA Today opinion piece Monday urged more Democrats to support Mamdani “or risk getting left behind.”

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman celebrated the report, posting to X, “Thank you @ericadamsfornyc for doing the right thing for NYC!”
