‘F*ck Him!’ Mark Halperin Rages at Ta-Nehisi Coates ‘Talking Bullsh*t’ About Charlie Kirk

Mark Halperin unloaded on author Ta-Nehisi Coates for “talking bullsh*t” about Charlie Kirk after the author doubled down in trashing the assassinated conservative activist as a “hatemonger” in a podcast sitdown with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein.

Coates was interviewed on The Ezra Klein Show on Sunday, when he sparred with Klein. Coates had written a rebuttal in Vanity Fair challenging Klein’s Times column that it was possible as a liberal to disagree with Kirk’s views but appreciate his willingness to engage in the “larger shared project” of open debate.

Coates disagreed, arguing in his own column Kirk was someone who “reveled in open bigotry” and, throughout his appearance on Klein’s podcast, arguing the late activist’s content was “destructive” in a way that made him want to “draw a line.”

Journalist Emily Jashinsky raised Coates’ views in an episode of her show After Party on Monday, asking Halperin what he thought of Coates’ remarks on Kirk.

Halperin began by sharing that he had been “moved by and upset by” the assassination, admitting that before his appearance on Jashinsky’s show, he had “cried on a conference call” discussing the events since the shooting.

He then rounded on Coates:

I’d like to extend the presumption of grace to people and you know that guy was not speaking on teleprompter. He was speaking off the top of his head. So maybe he regrets saying what he said, but f*ck him because [Kirk] was not a hater. Just not. Just manifestly not. And there’s so much evidence on the public record.

He continued, saying that there many issues of disagreement that he had with Kirk, but that “he was not a hater.” Rounding on Coates again, he added:

[Kirk’s] got a widow and two young kids and so many friends who loved him. And this guy’s on the national town square talking bullsh*t about someone he didn’t know and saying really hurtful things.

And the reason it matters besides that it reflects that the New York Times will give a microphone to someone so ignorant is because this is what’s wrong with the desire for people to make money and get a claim off of saying false negative things about people they don’t know. It’s a real fundamental problem that’s existed throughout human history, but now in the digital age, you can do it and you can reach millions of people. So, f*ck him!
