Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has proposed sending detained migrants to a facility deep in the Florida Everglades he calls “Alligator Alcatraz.”
In a video posted to his X account this week, Uthmeier pitched the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport as a possible site to house 1,000 migrants picked up by ICE under President Donald Trump.
“Florida’s been leading on immigration enforcement, supporting the Trump administration and ICE’s efforts to detain and deport criminal aliens,” Uthmeier says in the video. “The governor tasks state leaders to identify places for new and temporary detention facilities. I think this is the best one.
“As I call it, ‘Alligator Alcatraz.'”
The 39-square-foot facility is surrounded by the Glades, making any sort of escape attempt difficult, according to Uthmeier.
“If people get out, there’s not much waiting for them except alligators and pythons,” he says in the video. “Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.”
