Fox News Deceptively Edits Trump Video To Falsely Claim Gavin Newsom ‘Lied’
Fox News host Jesse Watters played an edited clip of President Donald Trump to falsely claim that Gov. Gavin Newsom “lied” about a disputed phone call regarding protests in Los Angeles.
This week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents sparked protests in Los Angeles with a series of raids, after which Trump ordered the deployment of 4,000 National Guard soldiers and 700 active-duty Marines. He has also been locked in a back-and-forth with Newsom that includes the threat of arrest.
That feud included an exchange with reporters Tuesday in which Trump described a phone call he claimed took place on Monday:
REPORTER: Mr. President, when is last time you spoke with Governor Newsom?
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: A day ago. Called him up to tell him, got to do a better job. He’s done a bad job, causing a lot of death and a lot of potential death. If we didn’t send out the National Guard, and last time we gave him a little additional help, you would have — Los Angeles would be burning right now.
But when Newsom called BS and insisted that call didn’t happen, Trump enlisted Fox News anchor John Roberts to publicize what was billed as a “receipt” to prove Newsom “lied” — a screenshot that clearly showed a 16-minute phone call between Trump and Newsom.
The only problem is that call took place, as Roberts even noted, at “1:22 in the morning, which would have been 10:22 at night, California time” — a call that Newsom has already acknowledged.
On Tuesday night’s edition of Jesse Watters Primetime, Watters played a clip that erased the discrepancy by editing out Trump’s claim that the call took place on Monday, then accused Newsom of lying after the tape aired:
JESSE WATTERS: He says if it wasn’t for him, L.A. would be up in smoke.
PRESIDENT DONALD: Called him up to tell him, got to do a better job, he’s doing a bad job, causing a lot of death and a lot a potential death.
If we didn’t send out the National Guard, and last time we gave a little additional help, you would have Los Angeles would be burning right now.
The radical left, it’s usually radical left and it’s usual governors that are Democrat and they don’t want to call them in. They don’t wanna… Save lives. They don’t want to save property. They don’t want to call them in. I don’t know what it is.
JESSE WATTERS: Newsom responded, and he said there wasn’t a phone call. He said Trump never called him. Not even a voicemail, he said.
But John Roberts got Trump’s call logs, and it shows Trump called him late Friday night and they talked for 16 minutes.
Why would Newsom lie and claim Trump never called him? Why would he do that?
