Taylor Lorenz Disappointed to Learn Joe Biden Didn’t Die on Saturday: ‘Got My Hopes Up’

Taylor Lorenz, a former New York Times writer who founded tech publication UserMag.co, joked on X about her disappointment in realizing that a sarcastic comment on the death of former President Joe Biden was not an actual report.

Over the weekend user on X posted a message that said “RIP Joe Biden 1942-2025” and on a second line added, “You were always a racist fucking monster, and will not be missed,” and included an old photo of Biden. The message appeared to be motivated by Biden’s policy on the Gaza war while president, about which Lorenz also has strong feelings.

Lorenz quote shared the X post with an expression of the disappointment upon realizing Biden didn’t really die.

“This tweet got my hopes up,” she wrote, including a frowny face to demonstrate feeling sad about the former president being alive.

In a statement, Lorenz said: “Joe Biden is a war criminal who funded Israel’s genocide of the Palestinian people, completely dismantled public health protections during an ongoing pandemic, sacrificing millions of innocent people’s lives for the economy, among a slew of other atrocities. He will never be forced to atone for his unfathomable depravity and the suffering he inflicted on others. My sympathies lie fully with those Joe Biden has harmed and killed. It’s telling whose deaths the media and people in power will cheer for and whose deaths are mourned.”

In addition to her own ventures, Lorenz is also a contributor to former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan‘s company Zeteo, a subscription-based media venture he launched last year, and she has appeared on his podcast on the subject of “tech oligarchs.” Her post was noticed by some users on Sunday who shared screenshots.

Lorenz was recently caught up in another controversy after celebrating the murder of of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. In that instance she faced more widespread reactions among other members of the media.

Update: This story has been updated with a statement from Lorenz.
