James Carville Pushes Back On Trump Transgender Attacks In Hannity Interview
Democratic strategist James Carville pushed back on President Donald Trump’s relentless attack on transgender people in an interview with Fox News this week.
During the campaign, Trump waged a relentless campaign of attacks against transgender issues, and his first days in office continued to push that theme. He signed several executive orders on the issue, including a ban on trans athletes and a ban on trans people in the military.
On Thursday night’s edition of Fox News Channel’s Hannity, Carville took on the issue of trans athletes, telling host Sean Hannity the decisions about eligibility are up to the schools:
HANNITY: So, what you didn’t answer, though — OK. What you didn’t answer is…
(CROSSTALK)
CARVILLE: I don’t know that any Democrat ran for whether women or men playing sports.
HANNITY: They were out there advocating it.
CARVILLE: I know of no Democrat that ran on high school sports.
Well, I haven’t — I don’t know of them. And if they do…
(CROSSTALK)
CARVILLE: … I will let the high school…
(CROSSTALK)
HANNITY: I hear a lot of Democrats standing up for illegal immigrants, and they don’t want to deport them. They want to have sanctuary states and cities. I don’t hear — I hear a lot of Democrats like Kamala saying she’s against fracking and drilling, until she’s running for election.
I see a lot of Democrats do support men and their rights to play women’s sports. You’re not addressing those key issues that are…
(CROSSTALK)
CARVILLE: I don’t — is the key issue what the high school athletic association decides who’s eligible to play what sport?
Or is the key issue, are we going to continue to help people with health care with Medicaid and Medicare? Or is the key issue is that we’re going to retire people — secure people’s retirement security? The key issue is, in this century, under Democratic presidents, 50 million jobs have been created, and one million jobs under Republicans.
I think most Democrats that I know want to create jobs, create opportunity for people, and create opportunity for young people. I don’t know of anybody that’s sitting there worrying about who plays in the high school track meet. I really don’t.
HANNITY: No, I — well, OK. Well, maybe you’re not listening to the same Democrats I am. That’s fine.
Carville revisited the theme as the interview wrapped up:
HANNITY: But, anyway, I don’t know, James. I think you need a new playbook. I really do. But I still love you.
CARVILLE: Yes. I’m not too worried about the high school track meet, but I am worried about people having affordable health care. And that’s the difference between our two parties.
HANNITY: Well, if it was your daughter…
(CROSSTALK)
CARVILLE: … worry about the high school track meet. I will worry about people getting good health care, OK?
HANNITY: If your daughter was playing, you might be.
CARVILLE: We will agree to disagree. We will agree to disagree.
HANNITY: Get rid of Obamacare.
CARVILLE: All right, man.
HANNITY: That would be a good start.
All right, man, James, good to see you. God bless you.
(CROSSTALK)
CARVILLE: You had a chance. Do it again. You got the majority.
