MSNBC’s Joy Reid pondered why Republicans would call for the birth of “more kids” when they complain there are not enough resources for undocumented immigrants in the country.

In videos posted to Instagram, the MSNBC host specifically responded to comments made by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) in reaction to an Alabama Supreme Court ruling that identified frozen embryos as human life, leading to major questions about IVF services in the state.

Tuberville was mocked by many critics over his response to the ruling. The Republican senator called for “more kids,” but when he was told that paused IVF services could have the opposite effect, he said, “Well, that’s for another conversation. We need more kids. We need people to have the opportunity to have kids.”

Reid questioned “why” a state like Alabama would need “more kids.”

“The U.S. has a population north of 327 million people, why do we need more kids?” Reid asked. “I mean, your party, Sen. Tuberville, is the one screaming that 10 million immigrants… have been a strain to our country since Joe Biden was president and you’re claiming that that’s too many people.”

According to Reid, saying more immigrants coming through the southern border is a “crisis” defeats a call for more births because of resources. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has bitterly fought with the White House on southern border policies, taking to making his own arrests and busing migrants to states like Chicago and New York, which have claimed they are overwhelmed, amid crossing spikes.

A bipartisan Senate border deal was dead before it hit the House with House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and others saying Biden already has certain authorities in the legislation, like shutting down the border.

Reid questioned “why” Alabama needs “more kids,” tying Tuberville’s comments on IVF all the way back to slavery in the state.

Reid said:

Now you’re saying we need more kids? Can you explain? Who is the “we” and what’s the purpose? You’re also a senator from the state of Alabama, God help the people there. Are you saying the state of Alabama needs more kids? Why does the state of Alabama need more kids? More kids for what? There was a time when the state of Alabama absolutely needed more kids because, you know, Alabama was a slave state, and the mandate of the planter class in Alabama was for Black women to produce more kids because those kids were property and they could work more kids and make more money on their plantations.

Reid continued by asking whether Tuberville wants more “destitute” people to have kids so they do the work that migrants “are doing now.”

“Are you saying the state of Alabama needs more kids because you think that those populations will include people who are maybe destitute and desperate enough that if you kick out the immigrants like a lot of y’all want to do, you could make them do the work that the migrants are doing now because that kind of sounds slavery-ish,” she said.

Reid went on to call Tubervile’s comments a “little creepy” in her multi-subject rant on the subject.
