Trump FCC Chair Threatens ABC With Punishment Over Jimmy Kimmel’s Charlie Kirk Comments
FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened Disney, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel over the comedian’s “concerted effort to lie to the American people” by implying Charlie Kirk’s killer was a supporter of President Donald Trump.
Carr, during an appearance on Benny Johnson’s show on Wednesday, said the FCC may need to pursue “remedies” against Kimmel, if ABC does not discipline him first. The Trump-appointed chair said he can “certainly see a path forward for suspension” for Kimmel, at minimum.
“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
His comments come after Kimmel insinuated Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old suspected assassin, was a MAGA fan.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said on his show on Monday night.
Kimmel was criticized by many for the claim, considering the reported details point to Robinson being left-leaning. Robinson reportedly had a romantic relationship with his trans roommate, used phrases associated with Antifa, and, in text messages released on Tuesday, said he shot Kirk because of the conservative influencer’s “hatred.”
Carr, a moment before his comment mentioned above, said it appeared Kimmel had played “into that narrative that this was somehow a MAGA or Republican-motivated person,” which he said was “really, really sick.”
“What people don’t understand is… broadcasters are entirely different than people who use other forms of communication. They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and what comes with it is an obligation to operate in the public interest,” Carr added.
