Kevin McCarthy Rips Jamaal Bowman Pulling the Fire Alarm: ‘Childish Action’
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy offered his support for an investigation of Congressman Jamaal Bowman’s (D-NY) pullingf the fire alarm while Congress was scrambling over a potential government shutdown.
McCarthy gave an interview to Fox & Friends on Monday — where after talking about the rebellion he faces from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), the topic moved to Bowman triggering the fire alarm at the Cannon House Office. This took place as Democrats tried to delay the vote for the government funding bill.
When asked if he supports those calling for Bowman’s expulsion, McCarthy said “We’re gonna go through the investigation,” adding that Bowman should’ve known what he was doing at the time. He also blasted the representative’s behavior by referencing Bowman’s various confrontations with conservatives on Capitol Hill.
“His behavior has been unbecoming,” McCarthy said. “If it really was an accident, when the Capitol Police came to interview you, why would you lawyer up right away?”
After commenting that Bowman should’ve known the proper way of getting to the Capitol, McCarthy brought up Bowman’s history as a school principal to emphasize that he also should’ve known its wrong to cause a false fire alarm.
“If you have been a principal, you’ve had fire alarms and you’ve had children pull fire alarms,” McCarthy said. “So that’s where you go? To this childish action?”
Shortly after Congress passed the stopgap bill on Saturday to prevent the shutdown, McCarthy condemned Bowman’s actions by suggesting they were comparable to the actions taken by Donald Trump’s rioting supporters who stormed the U.S. Capitol. The former president and his other backers have run with that comparison to trash Bowman while demanding his prosecution.
Bowman has admitted to pulling the alarm, but he claimed it was a mistaken attempt to open a door, and that he was not trying to delay a vote.
