King Charles Declares Canada ‘Strong and Free’ Amid Trump’s 51st State Threats
King Charles III delivered an impassioned speech to the people of Canada on Tuesday, drawing thunderous applause as he declared, “The True North is indeed strong and free.” The king’s remarks come amid President Donald Trump’s threats to acquire America’s northern neighbor as its 51st state.
The British monarch, on an official state visit, spoke at the opening of Canada’s 45th Parliament.
“It is a source of great pride that, in the following decades, Canada has continued to set an example to the world in her conduct and values, as a force for good,” the king said. “As the anthem reminds us: The True North is indeed strong and free!”
He then appeared to flash a smirk as the crowd applauded in approval.
While Charles did not address Trump directly, many saw the remarks as a show of support for Canada, whose relationship with the U.S. has been strained amid the 51st state threats and trade war rhetoric.
Trump’s desire to acquire Canada has been a constant talking point since he took office in January.
The president and Canada’s newly minted Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared to be at odds on the issue during a tense White House meeting earlier this month.
After Carney maintained to reporters that Canada was “not for sale,” Trump retorted, “Never say never” in an awkward moment during the Oval Office meeting.
