President Donald Trump called for a military-style intervention in Los Angeles on Sunday to end what he called an “invasion” of “migrant riots.”

After he signed an order deploying 2,000 California National Guard troops to confront protests of immigration raids, tensions flared in the city.

Trump told reporters of the tense atmosphere, “They spit and worse. You know what they throw at ’em, right? And when that happens, I have a little statement: They spit, we hit!”

Soon after, Trump took to his Truth Social account to call for an end to the “invasion” in California’s most populated city.

“A once great American City, Los Angeles, has been invaded and occupied by Illegal Aliens and Criminals,” Trump wrote. “Now violent, insurrectionist mobs are swarming and attacking our Federal Agents to try and stop our deportation operations — But these lawless riots only strengthen our resolve.”

Trump concluded:

I am directing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Attorney General Pam Bondi, in coordination with all other relevant Departments and Agencies, to take all such action necessary to liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion, and put an end to these Migrant riots. Order will be restored, the Illegals will be expelled, and Los Angeles will be set free. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

Throughout Sunday afternoon, protestors clashed with troops, DHS personnel, and LAPD officers. By 6 p.m. ET, police officers were being attacked with projectiles.

Officers responded with tear gas. The department declared the assembly “unlawful” early Sunday evening.

“The Incident Commander has declared an UNLAWFUL ASSEMBLY in the area of Alameda between Temple and Aliso St,” the LAPD said on social media. “All persons must leave the area or be subject to arrest.”

Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom asked those protesting to refrain from giving “Trump what he wants,” implying Trump was seeking a violent clash.

“Stay calm. Stay peaceful,” the governor wrote on X.
