Michael Wolff Vows to Open ‘Dark Curtain’ and Put Trumps ‘Under Oath’ With Epstein Suit: ‘I’d Like Nothing Better’
Author Michael Wolff vowed to open a “dark curtain” and put the Trumps “under oath” on Wednesday after filing a lawsuit against First Lady Melania Trump, alleging she tried to silence him with threats of a $1 billion lawsuit over his reporting on her alleged connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
In a filing Tuesday in New York Supreme Court, Wolff claims the First Lady’s actions were designed “for the sole purpose of harassing, intimidating, punishing or otherwise maliciously inhibiting” his freedom of speech.
The suit includes a letter from Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito, demanding Wolff retract comments made to The Daily Beast and its podcast, apologize, and make “a monetary proposal to Mrs. Trump to ameliorate the harm that you have caused.”
In a video posted to Instagram, Wolff said he had “extensively interviewed Jeffrey Epstein, not least of all about his relationship with Donald Trump,” and had spoken publicly about Epstein’s remarks concerning both President Donald Trump and his wife.
Wolff said he received notice “several days ago” that the First Lady’s lawyers intended to sue him for a billion dollars, describing the threat as part of a broader pattern of “SLAPP suits” meant to “intimidate people from talking about this exact subject.”
“I can’t live like that,” the author said. “To be perfectly honest, I’d like nothing better than to get Donald Trump and Melania Trump under oath in front of a court reporter and actually find out all of the details of their relationship with Epstein.”
Wolff said his lawyers filed for a declaratory judgment in New York, giving him subpoena power to call witnesses and “find out exactly what the relationship between Epstein and the Trumps was.”
Calling the effort “expensive but fruitful,” Wolff said he hopes to “finally open this dark curtain and find out what Donald Trump, Melania Trump, and Jeffrey Epstein were doing together.”
Melania Trump’s office dismissed Wolff’s accusations in a statement to NBC News, and said she “is proud to continue standing up to those who spread malicious and defamatory falsehoods as they desperately try to get undeserved attention and money from their unlawful conduct.”
The Daily Beast later retracted the story, titled, “Melania Trump ‘Very Involved’ in Epstein Scandal: Author,” saying it “did not meet our standards.” Wolff’s suit argues his remarks were taken out of context and denies defaming Trump.
Epstein, once a friend of Trump’s, died by suicide in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.
