Former staffers for Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) claimed they had to make “burner accounts” while working for the congresswoman so they could boost her image online and fight with critics.
Jake Lahut reported for WIRED that “former staffers” of Mace claimed they were “setting up burner accounts on a variety of social media platforms to monitor what people were saying about her and bolster her image.” She would also encourage staffers to create personal burner accounts so they could defend her against critics, according to those staffers, all of whom chose to remain anonymous.
“We had to make multiple accounts, burner accounts, and go and reply to comments, saying things that weren’t true—even Reddit forums,” one ex-employee said. “We were congressional staff, and there were actual things we could be doing to help the constituents.”
Mace, a congresswoman who has made technology central to much of her agenda, has a history of using “bot” accounts, according to Wesley Donehue, whose consulting firm worked for Mace from 2022 to 2024. During a 2023 investigation into Mace’s ex, whom she accused of “assault, harassment, and voyeurism,” Donehue made mention of Mace’s tech-savvy ways.
“She programs her own bots. She sets up Twitter burner accounts. This is kind of a thing she does. She sits all night on the couch and programs bots, because she’s very, very computer savvy. She controls her own voter database, she programs a lot of her own website, she programs Facebook bots and Instagram bots and Twitter bots. It’s what she does for fun,” he reportedly said.
Sydney Long, communications director for Mace, denied the WIRED report and staffers’ accusations of having to create “burner” accounts.
“It would be a slap in the face to taxpayers across the country for me to spent [sic] time on their dime commenting on my bosses [sic] personal life,” she said. “The only relationship the Congresswoman cares about is her one with South Carolina. She is married to her job and that is all the media should care about.”
