Climate change protesters stormed the green at the TPC River Highlands during the final hole of the Travelers Championship on Sunday.
Footage and photos posted on social media showed protesters throwing gas canisters as they rushed onto the 18th green in Cromwell, Connecticut. Fans began to boos the protesters and shouted profanities as law enforcement and venue security attempted to remove them from the field.
The protesters were dawned in t-shirts with the extinction symbol that includes an hourglass and the planet to emphasize that time is running out to deal with climate change. Other shirts that the protesters wore read, “No golf on a dead planet.”
Golfer Scottie Scheffler was on the verge of winning the tournament before the protesters took to the field. South Korean golfer Tom Kim, who came in 2nd in the tournament, needed a birdie in order to force a playoff against Scheffler.

Climate activists have often used large sporting venues to stage protests in order to raise awareness to their policy initiatives and demands. Other protesters have stormed important NBA and NFL games with banners and signs bringing awareness to climate change.
