Pro-Trump Ex-Superman Busted Lashing Out At ‘Woke’ Movie — With Damning Scene From His Old Show

Ex-Superman actor and Trump supporter Dean Cain was mocked after he lashed out at director James Gunn’s “woke” depiction of the character as an immigrant — when his own TV show enacted the identical premise decades ago.

Gunn sparked a conservative backlash to his rebooted Superman film when he told The Sunday Times that the hero’s story is the “story of America”:

“I mean, Superman is the story of America,” Gunn says. “An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

The latest voice in the din is Cain, who portrayed the hero Kal-El and his alter ego Clark Kent for four seasons in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman and is a regular presence in conservative Superman backlashes.

Cain told TMZ he dreads a “woke” interpretation of Superman as an immigrant, but still plans to see the film:

How woke is Hollywood gonna make this character? How much is Disney gonna change their Snow White? How much are they, why are they gonna change these characters that exist, you know, for the times?

Superman has always stood for truth, justice, and the American way, and the American way is immigrant friendly. Tremendously immigrant friendly, but there are rules.

I think that was a mistake by James Gunn to say, you know it’s an immigrant thing, and I think it’s gonna hurt the numbers on the movie.

I was excited for the film. I’m excited to see what it is. Because James Gunn seems to have a sense of humor and the last iterations of Superman didn’t have much humor and I love the humor in Superman. So I’m rooting for it to be a success, but I don’t like that last political comment.

As several alert social media users noted, however, Gunn’s take is nothing new, and Superman properties have employed the same premise repeatedly — including Cain’s own iteration.

In a season four episode of Lois & Clark, Superman is inundated by a variety of government officials at the scene of his heroics — including an INS (the old version of ICE) official demanding to see his papers:

EMILY STEVENS: Superman, Emily Stevens with Immigration and Naturalization.

We just need to look at your green card.

DEAN CAIN AS SUPERMAN: Green card?!?

EMILY STEVENS: You are an alien, are you not?

Another user posted a clip from the long-running Smallville iteration of the character in which Tom Welling’s Clark calls out his mom for forging his adoption papers and making him “an illegal immigrant.”
