Rand Paul Shreds GOP ‘Falling in Lockstep’ Behind Trump-Backed ‘Wimpy’ Budget

Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) absolutely went off on the “Big Beautiful” budget bill which passed the House earlier this week and called out his fellow Republicans for “falling in lockstep” behind a package which he believes will “explode” the national debt.

Speaking with anchor Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday, the Kentucky Senator teed off on a bill that he feels doesn’t go nearly far enough to reduce spending.

“I think the cuts currently in the bill are wimpy and anemic,” Paul said. “But I still would support the bill, even with wimpy and anemic cuts, if they weren’t going to explode the debt.

“The problem is the math doesn’t add up,” he added. “They’re going to explode the debt by — the House says $4 trillion, the Senate’s actually been talking about exploding the debt $5 trillion. This year in September, when our fiscal year ends, the deficit will be about $2.2 trillion. {eople used to always say, the Republicans would say, ‘well that’s Bidenomics, that’s Biden spending levels.’ Well in March, every Republican, virtually every Republican other than me, voted to continue the Biden spending level — which is going to give us a $2 trillion our deficit. Now if you increase the debt ceiling four to five trillion dollars, that means they’re planning on two trillion this year and more than two trillion next year. That’s just not conservative.”

The bill, which passed the House by just a single vote early Thursday, seems certain to be drastically revised by the Senate before going back to the House. Paul is one of several Senate Republicans who has denounced the package for adding too much to the debt, likely resulting in drastic revisions to key parts of the legislation.

Paul lauded the work of Elon Musk and DOGE, but argued the cuts don’t nearly go far enough. He then called out his fellow party members for going along too easily and not challenging a bill they don’t truly believe in.

“People are going to wake up in about two months and say, how come the deficit’s still $2.2 trillion?” Paul said. “Where did the savings go? People are going be very disappointed conservatives. And I’m the one ringing the alarm saying they’re not doing anything. They’re not sending us a rescission package. They’re not cutting spending. Somebody has to stand up and yell, the emperor has no clothes! And everybody’s falling in lockstep on this. Pass the big, beautiful bill. Don’t question anything. Well, conservatives do need to stand up and have their voice heard!”

He added, “If we don’t stand up on it, I really fear the direction the country is going.”
