Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) posted and then deleted a tweet celebrating the supposed resignation of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Tuesday.

“Powell’s out!” declared Lee on X, bracketing his caption with siren emojis and sharing a fake letter from Powell stating that he had “decided to resign from my position as Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, effective at the close of business today, July 22, 2025.”

“I am proud of what we have accomplished. However, at this critical juncture, I believe new leadership is needed to carry forward the important work of the Federal Reserve and to re-inforce [sic] public confidence in its independence and effectiveness,” it continued.

President Donald Trump — who counts Lee as a reliable ally — has spent the last several months bashing Powell for not lowering interest rates.

“He is doing a lousy job. I’m not talking about that. Fortunately, we get to make a change in the next what, eight months or so. And we’ll pick somebody that’s good and we’ll pick somebody — I want a fair job. We want to see lower interest rates. Our country deserves it. We’re making a lot of money and doing great as a country,” said Trump last week amid reporting that he was considering firing Powell.

Already, social media has begun to pile on Lee and right-wing influencer Benny Johnson for touting the typo-filled letter.

“The typo ridden letter has now been deleted by both Benny Johnson and Senator Mike Lee,” observed Politico’s Ben Jacobs.

“I feel like I could walk up to Mike Lee and tell him I’m a space alien and he’d consider it for a good five minutes at least,” mused The Washington Post‘s Benjy Sarlin.

“This is like the 68th most embarrassing based mike lee moment tho,” argued The Bulwark’s Sam Stein.
