SHOCK POLL: 60% of Democrats Agree With Gavin Newsom on Transgender Athletes

A hefty majority of Democrats agree with Republican officeholders — and California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), a recent convert — that male-to-female transgender athletes shouldn’t be allowed to participate in women’s sports.

Newsom made waves when, in the inaugural episode of his new podcast, he agreed with guest Charlie Kirk on the issue.

“I think it’s an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness — it’s deeply unfair,” Newsom told Kirk.

“I revere sports, so the issue of fairness is completely legit. And I saw that — the last couple years, boy did I [see] how you guys were able to weaponize that issue at another level,” he observed before conceding that the term “weaponize” was unfair.

The progressive governor has faces significant pushback from members of his own party.

“There are kids waking up today in California with this news thinking that their governor hates them, and rightly so,” opined former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who called Newsom’s comments “disgusting.”

But a new survey from Echelon Insights suggests that most Democrats agree with Newsom, rather than Lightfoot.

According to said poll, 60% of the 457 Democratic or Democratic-leaning respondents  indicated that they either somewhat or strongly agreed with Newsom “that biological men who identify as women competing in women’s sports” is “deeply unfair.”

A greater proportion strongly agreed (31%), than the combined figure for those who either somewhat or strongly disagreed (27%).

Along those same lines, the proportion of Democrats who believe their party should move “to the center politically” (42%) doubles up the proportion who think they should move “to the left politically” (20%).

Eight-one percent, however, believe elected Democrats should be more “combative against Donald Trump than they are now.”
