Zohran Mamdani’s (D) use of the New York Knicks’s logo in an ad promoting his campaign for New York City mayor has earned him a cease and desist letter from the team.
“The advertisement aired during the Knicks season opener Wednesday night and featured an altered New York Knicks orange and blue logo that replaced the word ‘Knicks’ with ‘Zohran,'” the New York Post reported Friday.
“Mamdani also shared the advertisement on his social media platforms with the caption ‘This is our year. This is our time,’” the report said.
The cease and desist letter, obtained by the Post, states that Mamdani’s ad is “likely to mislead the public into believing that the Campaign is affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by, or in some way connected with the Knicks.”
A team spokesperson told the Post,”The Knicks want to make it clear that we do not endorse Mr. Mamdani for Mayor, and we object to his use of our copyrighted logo. We will pursue all legal remedies to enforce our rights.”
Mamdani is the frontrunner in the mayoral race that includes former Gov. Andrew Cuomo (I) and Curtis Sliwa (R). Incumbent mayor Eric Adams (D) dropped out of the race at the end of September following a series of scandals. He formally endorsed Cuomo on Thursday.
“Am I angry that I’m not the one taking down Zohran, the socialist and the communist? You’re darn right I am,” Adams said during the announcement. “But you know what? This city means more to me then anything and it’s time for us as a family to come together.”
The Post’s story did not include a reaction from the Mamdani camp.
