TikTok CEO Praises Trump in Response to Supreme Court Ruling

The CEO of TikTok Shou Zi Chew responded to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the U.S. ban of the app by praising President-elect Donald Trump.

TikTok is set to be banned in the country unless the app’s owner, ByteDance, finds a buyer in the coming days. On Friday, the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a federal law that will require TikTok to shut down unless its Chinese parent company can sell its majority stake by January 19th — one day before Trump is inaugurated.

“I want to thank President Trump for his commitment to work with us to find a solution that keeps TikTok available in the United States,” Chew says in a video released on Friday. Trump, who first tried to ban the app citing national security concerns, has since flip-flopped on the issue and is working to keep it legal.

Chew then praised Trump for using the platform to “express his own thoughts and perspectives” while claiming the president-elect supports the company.

“We are grateful and pleased to have the support of a President who truly understands our platform — one who has used TikTok to express his own thoughts and perspectives, connecting with the world and generating more than 60 billion views of his content in the process,” he added.

Trump is reportedly considering issuing an executive order on his first day in office that will allow TikTok to continue until new owners are found. Hedge fund billionaire Jeff Yass, one of Trump’s biggest donors in the last election cycle, has a massive stake in TikTok.
