Trump Announces Intention to Move Forward With North American Trade War, Impose Massive Tariffs on Canada and Mexico Next Week

President Donald Trump announced that massive new tariffs on Canada and Mexico would go into effect as scheduled next week in a Thursday morning post on Truth Social.

“Drugs are still pouring into our Country from Mexico and Canada at very high and unacceptable levels. A large percentage of these Drugs, much of them in the form of Fentanyl, are made in, and supplied by, China,” wrote Trump. “More than 100,000 people died last year due to the distribution of these dangerous and highly addictive POISONS. Millions of people have died over the last two decades. The families of the victims are devastated and, in many instances, virtually destroyed.”

He continued:

We cannot allow this scourge to continue to harm the USA, and therefore, until it stops, or is seriously limited, the proposed TARIFFS scheduled to go into effect on MARCH FOURTH will, indeed, go into effect, as scheduled. China will likewise be charged an additional 10% Tariff on that date. The April Second Reciprocal Tariff date will remain in full force and effect. Thank you for your attention to this matter. GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Trump had originally planned to impose the tariffs on the United States’ northern and southern neighbors in early February, but struck last second deals with Canada’s Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum to avert the outbreak of a North American trade war.

Now, Trump appears dead-set on imposing the 25% levy on Canadian and Mexican imports into the U.S. next Tuesday. The president has long argued that tariffs are a tool that can help lead to national prosperity and the creation of coveted manufacturing jobs. Critics argue that they are a tax on Americans that will lead to higher prices.
