Trump Declares ‘BIG WIN’ as Appeals Court Backs His National Guard Deployment In LA

President Donald Trump declared a “BIG WIN” after a federal appeals court ruled in favour of his deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, rebuking a challenge from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
In a late-night ruling Thursday, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals said Trump had likely acted within his statutory authority when he ordered 4,000 troops to quell unrest during anti-ICE protests earlier this month. The protests erupted following widespread anger over immigration raids across the city.
“We conclude that it is likely that the president lawfully exercised his statutory authority,” the panel wrote, citing federal provisions that permit deployment of troops when regular forces are unable to “execute the laws of the United States.”
Trump wasted no time in seizing on the appellate court’s move as vindication, taking to Truth Social late Thursday to celebrate:
BIG WIN in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on the President’s core power to call in the National Guard! The Judges obviously realized that Gavin Newscum is incompetent and ill prepared, but this is much bigger than Gavin, because all over the United States, if our Cities, and our people, need protection, we are the ones to give it to them should State and Local Police be unable, for whatever reason, to get the job done. This is a Great Decision for our Country, and we will continue to protect and defend Law abiding Americans. Congratulations to the Ninth Circuit, America is proud of you tonight!
Clapping back at Trump’s victory lap, Newsom took to X to praise the court’s warning that he cannot “do whatever he wants”:
The decision reverses a lower court order by U.S. District Judge Charles R. Breyer, who declared Trump’s actions “illegal” and warned of a “dangerous expansion of executive power.” Breyer had ordered the president to “return control of the California National Guard to the Governor… forthwith.”
The ruling also undercuts the state’s argument that federalization bypassed proper channels. The court found that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s notification to California’s Adjutant General likely fulfilled the requirement to act “through” the governor.
