Trump Makes New Excuse for Appointing Powell Hours After Falsely Claiming It Was Biden
President Donald Trump offered a new excuse for his appointment of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell — just hours after he falsely claimed President Joe Biden appointed Powell.
Trump has habitually attacked Powell, invoking his “termination” over Powell’s remarks on the worsening impact of Trump’s tariff policies and constantly pressuring him to lower interest rates.
During an Oval Office event Wednesday, Trump assailed Powell and claimed, “He’s a terrible Fed chair. I was surprised he was appointed. I was surprised, frankly, that Biden put him in and extended him, but they did.”
The gaffe prompted a clip of Powell’s appointment by Trump to go viral.
A few hours later, Trump called in for an interview on Wednesday night’s edition of Real America’s Voice’s Just The News, during which he appeared to acknowledge he appointed Powell, but blamed Steve Mnuchin for it:
SOLOMON: It’s crazy, sir. Are you thinking of removing him, or do you think he resigns before his term is up? Jerome Powell?
TRUMP: I’d love it if he wants to resign. That would be up to him. They say it would disrupt the market if I did. But you know, there are many people say he should be removed because of the fraud of what he’s doing at the Fed, with regard to the two and a half billion dollars, he’s spending two and a half billion dollars to, I guess it’s a renovation. I don’t know. I’m very good at that stuff. I should go look at it.
SOLOMON: It’s crazy. The building costs less to build than it costs to renovate. It’s insane. Yeah, it’s crazy.
TRUMP: It’s like one of the most expensive buildings in the world. He’s putting all sorts of parks on the top of the building, and this that, and I guarantee the contractors are making a fortune. No, this is not a guy. This is a guy who was recommended. He was recommended to me by Mnuchin, and he (unintelligible).
SOLOMON: That’s great.
