A monthly meeting at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was briefly interrupted on Tuesday by protesters calling for FCC Chair Brendan Carr to be fired.

“Fire Carr, the censorship czar!” two protesters repeated as they held posters. Officers removed both from the room where Carr and others were speaking.

Video of the interruption was posted to social media by Guardian reporter Jeremy Barr and others. The interruption does not appear to be included in the official stream of the meeting published by the FCC.

Multiple other demonstrators also held posters during the meeting, all calling for Carr to be fired.

One poster read: “Brendan, we can do this the easy way (you quit) or the hard way (you’re fired!).”

Carr’s role at the FCC and questions around President Donald Trump’s influence have heightened since the brief suspension of late-night comedian Jimmy Kimmel over comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said, referring to the debate around the politics of suspected Kirk shooter Tyler Robinson.

According to officials, early evidence suggested Robinson was “indoctrinated” in far-left ideology in the years leading up to Kirk’s murder, something Kimmel critics were quick to point out.

ABC’s brief suspension of Kimmel, a vocal critic of Trump, followed multiple broadcast groups refusing to air the late-night show, though those decisions have now been reversed.

Carr came under fire from critics as he red-flagged Kimmel’s comments and sent a message to ABC about doing things the “easy way” or the “hard way” not long before Kimmel was “indefinitely suspended.”

“Frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” Carr said at the time. “These companies can find ways to change conduct and take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”
