WATCH: Pulse-Pounding Video Shows the Moment Ukraine Blew Up Crimea Bridge With Underwater Explosives
A bridge connecting Crimea to Russia was targeted by Ukrainian forces using explosives underwater this week, and the whole thing was caught on camera.
Ukrainian Security Service Lt. Gen. Vasily Malyuk said in a statement that the targeted bridge is used by Russia to supply their troops.
“Illegal objects of the Russian Federation have no place on the territory of our state. The Crimean Bridge is therefore an absolutely legitimate target, especially given that the enemy used it as a logistical artery to secure their troops,” the lieutenant general said. “Crimea is Ukraine, and any manifestations of the occupation will receive our harsh response.”
The Kerch Bridge was opened in 2018 by Russian President Vladimir Putin. It was hit with 2,500 pounds of underwater explosives this week. No civilians were hurt in the blast. Forces said the bridge was “severely damaged” by the blast.
“Previously, we struck the Crimean Bridge twice in 2022 and 2023. So today we continued this tradition already underwater,” Malyuk said.
The bridge explosion came just days after Ukraine managed to smuggle drones to the perimeter of multiple Russian air bases. Dozens of Russian aircrafts were targeted and hit in the attack. The extent of the damage is not clear, but Ukrainian officials claim the damage will cost the Kremlin $7 billion. Ukrainian forces said they hit five separate airfields and destroyed dozens of aircrafts, including the A-50, Tu-95 and Tu-22M aircraft.
Ukrainian and Russian officials met on Monday in Turkey to continue ongoing peace talks after the weekend’s attack, but little progress was made.
