The Washington Post sparked a flurry of anger online Friday with a post on X that raised eyebrows by raising an offensive question in the wake of the murders of two Israeli embassy staffers, saying the grisly act of terror has amplified “confusion” about “where Jews belong.”
“Um, wut,” wrote National Review’s Jonah Goldberg on Friday, quote sharing the Washington Post X account’s message, which included a link to an editorial at the paper’s website. It was a sentiment widely shared in reactions to this bizarre commentary.
The killings of two Israeli Embassy staffers amplify confusion felt since the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks about where Jews belong. https://t.co/MZo6rrV2Dt

At the time of this post, that is also the subheading on the article itself.

The terrible message sparked a slew of reactions.

You’re confused about where Jews belong? This is actually a dilemma for you?
I’ll tell you where they don’t belong: dead or dying on a sidewalk or at a music festival, killed for merely existing. https://t.co/5jQtufBK65

Some, including on the right, noted that the article is slightly more nuanced than the message on X.
The tweet is far worse than the article. The article isn’t good either, but at least it focuses on the victims of the radical anti-Semitism *as* its victims, while the NYT makes victims of the anti-Semitic radicals. https://t.co/42HikBTCAP https://t.co/ImIXOYYGzh

in fairness to this social media person, the article quotes Jews using that formulation multiple times. I don’t think anything malicious is intended here https://t.co/LBvqGqPL40

At the time of this post, the Post has not responded to the outraged replies about the objectively terrible tweet.
