DNC Chair Jaime Harrison Rips GOP as ‘Trump Party’ of ‘Fear Fascism and Fraud’
Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison told radio host Dean Obeidallah that the GOP is the “Trump party” of “Fear, fascism, and fraud.”
On Friday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Dean Obeidallah Show, the host asked Harrison how to convince voters to take voting rights seriously, and also touched on actor John Voight’s latest pro-Trump rant:
Dean: What do we do to inform people that we’re not trying to get people just worked up for the sake of it?! We could lose this democratic Republic. Yeah, Blue States maybe you could vote but a national level will never be able to control the White House or Congress or the Senate again, if the GOP gets their way. That’s their goals.
Chairman Harrison: This becomes a very slippery slope folks. If you allow people to carve away their voting rights, then that opens the door for other things. Pandora’s box opens. When in [Supreme Court case of] Shelby versus Holder when [Chief justice] Roberts decided to go on the other side and to decimate the Voting Rights Act, it opened Pandora’s box and allowed many of these [red] states to immediately go in and start carving out ways and make it much more difficult for specific populations to vote in this country. And it’s only gotten worse since and it will continue to get worse because if we don’t push back at this time, if we don’t stop these efforts this time, then these people are going to be helping to say you know what we can go even further than we have gone because guess what there is no wall to stop it. That’s why we have to move and let me tell you this also, it may be just communities of color today but again this is a slippery slope in terms of going after rights. We see that they’re going after women’s rights to control their own bodies, we see that they’re trying to burn books and all that. This does not sound like America, it sounds like Russia, it sounds like some other foreign nation.
But that’s why I say that the GOP has transformed itself deep, it is no longer the party of Lincoln, this is the party of Trump which is a party of fear, a party of fraud, a party of fascism. We are the only thing that is standing in the way to protect our democracy.
Dean: I couldn’t agree more wiith you. As an aside, today Jon Voight the actor put out a video praising Trump and saying Trump is being guided by the spirit of Abraham Lincoln. I’m like, that’s the wrong guy from the Civil War if you want the [GOP] base to be happy–It should be the spirit of Jefferson Davis.
Chair Harrison: Well, John Voight needs to stop smoking whatever he’s smoking because that’s some powerful stuff man if he is equating trump to Abraham Lincoln, good Lord.
