A college athletic director who starred in season five of the Netflix series Last Chance U was reportedly shot on campus Thursday.
According to a report from NBC News, Laney College Athletic Director John Beam was in critical condition following the shooting. It occurred around noon at the Laney College Fieldhouse in Oakland, California.
The report continued:
“We’re currently asking the public’s help in locating a suspect, a potential suspect in this case,” Oakland Police Department Acting Chief James Beere told reporters.
Police responded to reports of shots fired on or near campus shortly before noon, Beere said.
Investigators were looking at surveillance video to help determine what occurred, Beere said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Beam was featured in season five of the Netflix series “Last Chance U,” which is about college football athletes and their struggles. The season that focused on Beam and Laney College aired in 2020.
Thursday’s shooting, the report noted, was the second on an Oakland campus this week. The day before, a student was shot at Skyline High School. Two suspects were arrested, and two firearms were recovered. All three are minors.
The victim was transported to a local hospital and was expected to survive the shooting.
