‘Dammit!’ Yankees Star Jazz Chisholm Jr. Botches Play While Giving In-Game Interview With ESPN
An in-game interview on Sunday Night Baseball turned awkward when New York Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. botched a throw in the middle of it.
In the third inning of the Yankees’ series finale against the Boston Red Sox, Chisholm was mic’d up to chat with ESPN’s broadcast booth. Because there’s relatively little action in the sport compared to basketball or even football, the in-game interviews typically start and finish without much excitement.
Every once in a while, however, the ball happens to fly in the direction of the interviewee. As Chisholm was about to take a series of fan questions, Red Sox outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela hit a ground ball right to him. As Chisholm extended his glove out to make the play, his momentum sent him spinning. Chisholm attempted to use that momentum to spin into a throw to first base, but it sailed away from first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Rafaela was able to advance to second base after the errant throw.
“Dammit!” Chisholm exclaimed as soon as the ball left his hands.
After a few seconds of silence, Chisholm simply said, “spin throw.” ESPN announcer Karl Ravech added that the throw was indeed a “difficult play.” The announcer then informed him that the play was actually scored as a hit and not an error.
“A hit and an error,” Chisholm joked.
