British Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton will reportedly leave Mercedes in 2025 to join Ferrari, ending one of the most dominant tenures in the history of the sport.

Sources confirmed the 39-year-old’s decision to BBC. Last year, Hamilton signed a two-year deal with Mercedes that would keep him with the team through the 2025 season; however, Hamilton is eligible to leave at the end of 2024.

According to sources, the entire Mercedes team has been called to a team briefing. During this briefing, it is expected that Hamilton’s decision will be announced.

Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013 after leaving McLaren, where he won his first World Championship. At the time, the move was viewed as questionable at best due to Mercedes’ lack of success in the sport.

That doubt was quickly put to rest, with the team winning eight straight Constructors’ Championships from 2014 to 2021. During that time, Hamilton secured another six World Championships to bring his career total to seven. He is tied with German legend Michael Schumacher for the most in F1 history.

The last two seasons, however, have left a lot to be desired. After narrowly missing out on his eighth championship in controversial fashion in 2021, Hamilton has yet to win a race since then. Mercedes has struggled to adapt to new rules regulations, while Red Bull and Dutch driver Max Verstappen have dominated. Mercedes did finish second in the Constructors’ Championship, but the team scored just 409 points to Red Bulls’ 890.

Ferrari fell just three points short of Mercedes to finish third. With the reported move, Hamilton will join 26-year-old Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc.
