‘How Do You Miss That?!’ MLB Announcers Blow a Gasket Over Two Utterly Horrendous Calls

MLB announcers across the league were simply dumbfounded by a pair of horrendous performances by home plate umpires on Tuesday.

The Baltimore Orioles took on Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday at Camden Yards. In the top of the fourth inning, Orioles starting pitcher Zach Eflin faced Jays second baseman Ernie Clement while his team held a 6-3 lead. After being called for a ball on the first pitch, Eflin followed that up with a 91 mph sinker right down the middle — a clear and obvious strike. Home plate umpire Brian Walsh, however, thought differently and the count went to 2-0.

“Wait a minute,” Mid-Atlantic Sports Network announcer Kevin Brown said. “Wait a minute!”

His broadcast partner Ben McDonald was just as stunned.

“My goodness!” McDonald said. “What is going on at home plate? Brian Walsh, man.

“That’s literally right down the middle!” Brown added.

“I mean, you couldn’t set it on a tee in the heart of the plate any better,” McDonald continued. “Look at this pitch right here. How do you miss that? Get that right arm going, Brian!”

Fortunately for the Orioles, the call ultimately proved insignificant as the team won 11-4.

The New York Mets could not say the same. In the seventh inning of their game against the San Diego Padres, star outfielder Juan Soto was in the batter’s box with one out and his team trailing 6-5. With the count at 0-2, Soto took a high slider that was well above the zone. Instead of the count going to 1-2, the ump called strike three as a shocked Soto stared at him before walking away.

“Oh!” one of MLB Network’s announcers said. “He could get tossed here.”

“What?” said the other announcer. “I mean, come on now!”

After that out, the Mets were unable to close the gap in the seventh inning and would go on to lose the game 7-5.
