University of Connecticut men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley has turned down a $70 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.

Last week, it was revealed that Hurley was the Lakers’ primary target in the team’s search for a new coach. The Lakers had also been connected to ESPN analyst and former player JJ Redick, but Hurley was reportedly the first choice from the beginning.

According to Wojnarowski, the Lakers offered Hurley a six-year, $70 million contract. The deal would have made him one of the six highest paid coaches in the league.

Instead, Hurley will remain in Storrs, Connecticut with the goal of winning an NCAA national championship for a third consecutive season.

Sources informed Wojnarowski that the team will “regroup” before continuing the coaching hunt. James Borrego, the associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, is among the list of potentials. Redick may also get his first formal interview with the team.

Hurley, on the other hand, will resume contract talks with the university. He will likely become one of college basketball’s highest paid coaches.
