Mets Pitcher Gets Ejected and Throws Glove into Stands as Broadcaster Declares, ‘That’s Where the Mets Are At Right Now’

The New York Mets lost again on Wednesday and have dropped eight of their last nine games and 15 of their last 19.

The season’s nadir may have come in the top of the eighth inning at Citi Field against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tied 3-3, the Mets bullpen imploded and allowed six runs in the inning to go down 9-3.

Down six, Mets pitcher Jorge Lopez threw a 2-1 pitch to Freddie Freeman who started to offer before checking his swing. Third base umpire Ramon DeJesus ruled Freeman did not swing, prompting a reaction from Lopez, who was promptly ejected.

“DeJesus has got a short fuse,” said SNY color commentator Ron Darling.

“What’s that all about?” play-by-play man Gary Cohn asked. “That’s adding insult to injury.”

The broadcast then aired a replay of Lopez leaving the field after being ejected. Having untucked his jersey, the reliever tossed his glove underhand over the protective netting and into the stands.

“And Lopez responds by tossing his glove up over the netting and into the crowd,” Cohn noted.

“That’s where the Mets are at right now,” Darling said.

“It’s not a good optic,” Cohn replied.

Another replay showed Mets catcher Tomas Nido yelling at DeJesus while seemingly insisting Lopez did not say anything to warrant being tossed from the game.

As the camera showed the fan who caught Lopez’s glove, Cohn stated, “Ugly day for the Mets, but that guy’s happy.”

The Mets went on to lose the game 10-3 and dropped to 22-33 on the season.

After the game, Lopez told a reporter he is on “the worst team in probably the whole fucking MLB.” In response, the Mets designated him for assignment.
