Rap Legend Flavor Flav Singing the National Anthem at an NBA Game Went Exactly As You’d Expect
Anyone familiar with the vocal stylings of legendary rapper Flavor Flav could have predicted exactly how his performance of the national anthem would go.
When it happened on Sunday, however, it still managed to be more incredible than anyone could have expected.
Flav, whose real name is William Drayton Jr., was given the opportunity to sing the Star-Spangled Banner at the Milwaukee Bucks game against the Atlanta Hawks. He received a warm welcome from the crowd before crooning the anthem for two-and-a-half minutes.
Naturally, it was a rough vocal performance and exemplary of the Flavor Flav fans have come to know and love. During the performance, the camera panned to Bucks and several players could be seen laughing. It was nearly identical to the time singer Fergie performed a strange rendition of the anthem at the NBA All-Star game. Still, Drayton seemed to really enjoy the opportunity, and the crowd gave him a warm reception when he was done.
While many on the internet were also quick to laugh at the performance, none of that mattered to the rapper. For him, it was a dream come true.
“The anthem was a long-time bucket list item… That was fun!” he said on Twitter. “I can’t live my life worried about what people might say about me. I won’t let that stop me from trying new things and doing things I wanna do. Some people might not like that. But a sure failure is if you stop trying.”

In that regard, it’s hard not to respect Drayton’s performance. He made a career out of being himself — no matter how unorthodox — and now enjoys the fruits of his labor by checking off lifelong bucket list items.
