Wake Forest manager Tom Walter is being accused of using an anti-gay slur in the direction of an opposing batter during an NCAA baseball tournament game.

Walter’s team faced Tennessee in the Knoxville regional Monday. The winner would go on to take on Fayetteville Regional winner Arkansas in a best-of-three series in the Super Regional round.

In the fourth inning of Monday’s game, Wake Forest trailed Tennessee 6-2. As Tennessee infielder Andrew Fischer was stepping into the batter’s box to begin his at-bat, the ESPN broadcast cut to Walter standing in his team’s dugout. At that moment, Walter was seen saying something in Fischer’s direction — though it wasn’t clear if he was saying it to him. It appeared as though Walter yelled, “Fucking f*ggot.”

Social media users who viewed the clip seemed to unanimously agree that Walter did indeed say that. That being the case, the clip was met with a great deal of backlash.

Just a few pitches later, Fischer hit a two-run home run to give the Volunteers a commanding 8-3 lead.

During the post-game press conference, Walter was not asked about those fourth-inning comments. The manager did, however, praise the Tennessee fanbase and venue for the latest few days of competition.
