WATCH: LA Angels Outfielder Taylor Ward Bloodied After Head-First Collision With Scoreboard

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward crumpled to the ground in Houston on Sunday night after smashing his face into a metal scoreboard while chasing down a fly ball.

Ward had been chasing down a fly ball in the eighth inning when the chilling thud of his crash could be heard in Daikin Park, sending teammates rushing to his side.

The impact was caught live on the broadcast before Ward immediately signaled for medical help, with relievers Andrew Chafin and Kenley Jansen sprinting from the bullpen to help.

Ward suffered a gash above his eye and was “maybe going to the hospital to get some stitches,” according to Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery, who added that “the only saving grace” was that Ward had not braced for impact.

Angels outfielder Jo Adell defended Ward for doing what “he’s supposed to do,” but lashed out at the stadium’s design, fuming that “there should be no out-of-town metal scoreboard anywhere” on the field.

“This sh*t is ridiculous,” Adell told the Orange County Register. “A guy goes back to make a play, and he’s got to worry about a metal fence. That’s crazy. So that’s my honest opinion about it. He did everything he could to make a play, and he gets beat up by something that’s beyond controllable.”

The Angels wound up sealing a 3-0 victory over the Astros.
