WATCH: ‘Mad Dog’ Russo, During ESPN Hit, Evidently Triggered a Weird Apple FaceTime Feature With a Hand Gesture

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo showed his age on Monday when a rant on ESPN was awkwardly interrupted by him causing some unintended visual effect on his phone screen.

While Russo normally appears on First Take each Wednesday, he joined via video call on Monday to discuss the selection committee’s controversial choices for this year’s College Football Playoff. As expected, he also managed to shoehorn in his sports betting from the weekend.

According to Russo, the over-under for Iowa’s points in the first half of the Big Ten championship against Michigan was 2.5. If someone were to bet the over, they would have needed Iowa to score at least three points in the first half. Basically, they would have needed just a field goal to win the bet.

Russo bet the over. Iowa didn’t score a single point in the entire game.

“All they had to go was kick a stupid field goal!” Russo said. “They had the ball seven times! They had three first downs! They did not score! What an easy one to win! Kick a field goal! Didn’t do it.”

As Russo detailed his bad luck, a filter suddenly appeared on his screen showing several balloons up from the bottom of the frame to the top. No one seemed to acknowledge it as they were all laughing at Russo’s rant.

Apparently, the effect was caused by Russo’s hand gestures. As noted by Awful Announcing, the latest iteration of iPhone operating system introduced gesture recognition on FaceTime. When Russo made the “peace” sign with his hand, it triggered the balloons.

Russo’s known for being very expressive with his hands, so if he ever has to join the show virtually, it’s reasonable to assume he’ll somehow trigger something else.
